You can literally be given your tax return in cash

Refund, people.  Refund.
Now I'm laughing over the image of someone trying to hand-write a 1040 using a Sharpie on a series of dollar bills.

I see I am not the only person to be annoyed by this.  :)

If I hadn't spend those years as a tax preparer, I might not be QUITE so pedantic. I feel compelled to be a little apologetic, but not enough to stop doing it. Precision does matter sometimes.

And sometimes it really doesn't matter.

I guess it's up to the individual reader to decide if your "precision" was really necessary, or more in line with the grammar and spelling Nazis who prigishly point out every minor error they find on the internet.

I'm sure people would be fine with that as long as it was accepted at Walmart.   :/

Implied above (see "sometimes").

It's also up to the individual commenter to debate the value of a correction, as I did. I wasn't alone in concluding that the distinction is worth maintaining, as evidenced by other comments.

I used to do this kind of thing often enough that my behavior probably fit your description there. I've dialed it back dramatically as I grew up and mellowed out. If it's still occasionally viewed as excessive, there's not much I can do about that. I'm genuinely trying to maintain just enough emphasis on precision that the quality of communication is not degraded.

That comic is one of my all-time favorites, but it should really say "someone on the Internet is wrong". ;)

"Someone on the internet is wrong" more accurately describes that "someone" is "on the internet" and may be preferred. However, since English allows for changing the order of parts of a sentence to reflect emphasis without a change in meaning, I would say that either is grammatically correct.

This has turned into my favorite pointless internet discussion in some time.  Let's all get together and discuss tautology when it's time to discuss tautology.

I'm surprised to not see more love for the "forced saving" argument for an income tax refund. That is a big part of the argument for paying down your mortgage after all. Perhaps someone who does have a mortgage shouldn't be getting much of a tax refund? Many people don't have mortgages, however.

To be clear, it was meant as a style quibble, but I really feel that it was important to avoid suggesting that said person was not also wrong in real life. People who are wrong on the internet are terrible, and are probably wrong at every place and time.

I mean, god forbid I should accidentally give some idiot troll implied credit for correctness in contexts other than the one in which I am currently attempting to correct their specified instance of wrongness.

I'd join Tautology Club.

Hitler would've been wrong on the Internet.
