Tangible benefits of reaching 5x/10x/15x/20x/25x expenses saved
« on: October 07, 2019, 10:04:04 AM »
I figured this could be an interesting thread where we each write out a brief summary of what we personally imagine to be the tangible benefits for reaching each of these milestones for years of living expenses saved/invested.  I'd be curious to read what others think about the status/potential/benefits at each level.  I'll start:

5x - You've developed a consistent habit of saving and financial discipline that the majority of your peers likely has not acquired.  While you're nowhere near FI, you have proven to yourself you can build wealth and reach bigger goals.
10x - You did it again, doubling what you did when you reached 5x.  You still aren't FI, but you feel more at ease at work knowing your options are opening up a little more.  You've maybe even considered whether it could be worth it to try cutting your hours a bit.  Maybe you do it, or maybe you focus on the next step.
15x - At this point, you're well on your way to partial FI.  You are getting borderline Lean FIRE, and you know you could definitely permanently switch to part-time work if you wanted.  You might do this, or you might just push forward.
20x - You are way more relaxed knowing that your investments are likely outpacing your spending more often than not.  You might explore cutting back to part-time work or otherwise might start planning out those bigger FIRE plans because the next step will be here in no time.
25x - FI by many people's standards. Your work is optional.  You might play around with the numbers to determine if you want to build further buffer for some unnecessary additional adventures/experiences that might cost a little more.  You're no longer bound to a job out of any major necessity though anymore.

I might add a layer in there at like 1x or some larger FU fund levels.

As well as access to basic emergency funds.

For me, where the money is makes a difference.

Before age 30 I had been saving in my 401k but had as much as $30k in consumer debt and no after-tax savings.

After 5 years of effort I had rid myself of debt and my 401k hit 6 figures. (Because I didn't raid it and kept saving at least as much needed to get full company match.)

Then I started building after tax savings.

It meant an unexpected $2k expense was a mild disappointment instead of a crisis or a debt building event. Huge difference.

It actually drove my stress up at first as I spent too much time worrying if I was allocating and strategizing my money correctly/optimally. I got over that by adding myself I was much better off now in any contingency.

More money means more responsibility but more freedom.

50x - MMM forum members berate you for over saving and wasting the last 5 years of your life being an overachiever. You finally give in and retire to escape further face punches. 😂

Biggest tangible benefit is the stress reduction. Knowing I have x number of years of expenses saved if I lose my job is a huge relief.

And then quietly go back to work part time because you realised that actually you enjoyed working...

I don't know about tangible, but these were ones I sorta remember meaning something to me:

2x:  There is really no reason to put up with a horrible employer/employment situation (on a relative scale) b/c you'll find a new job that pays as much as this one well before you run out of money.

5x:  THis (plus house being paid off) seemed like so much cushion that it gave me the guts to start a business, which ended up leading to a much faster FatFire and guaranteed the working I was doing would always be from home.

10x:  This was the point I started feeling rich, because it coincided with the point I had a somewhat pedestrian good return year on my investments (10%) and I realized if I were completely out of work that year that return would have totally paid all my expenses and not touched the principal.  That just blew my mind I could have done zero work that year and not gone backwards.

Nope

50X:  You can do whatever the hell you want at work.  Come in late.  Leave early.  Pass on mandatory meetings.  Know that even if you screwed up some calculation, there's enough margin that you'll be fine.  Look at the Porsche website and price out a 911 GT-3.  In white with a proper manual gearbox.

I laughed, but then I realized I'm close to 50x! I bet the majority of people would think I don't have enough, though.
