Talk about not getting it!
« on: April 20, 2016, 08:06:55 AM »
Long article but scroll towards the end for the details of this guy's spendy life.  He says he knows he made bad choices but really the whole article is about blaming society or the economy for those choices.  Had to send the kids to very elite schools, wife had to be a SAHM, etc., etc.  Book publisher demanded advance refund after missed deadline even though missed deadlines are very common (wtf). Good grief.  His hair was always on fire but he likes the warm glow.

Guy isn't even to step 1 - realizing there is a problem and that YOU can fix it.

Or maybe he is doing something - lots of money in 2000 word whiny essays these days it seems.

I read the whole article. Unreal. He is painting himself as a victim but he is anything but. Yes, there has been a downward shift in incomes in some categories, but his situation is all of his own making. He was in denial, full of pride and ego about what his lifestyle should be. He saw himself as part of an elite creative class of NY high earners despite reality. He wanted to live where he wanted to live; he wanted to buy what he wanted to buy; he wanted to send his kids through private school and elite universities, he wanted his wife to stay home, he wanted to do what he wanted to do for a living despite changing conditions making it nearly impossible to earn enough because otherwise he would not be his true, authentic self (WTF). I love how he said he never kept up with the Joneses, but every one of these decisions is exactly that.

And now broke with no options and he will be a burden on his children, who he raised to have everything fall out of the sky for them.

Spoiled, entitled...

He's almost to step 1.  He can see a whole lot of trees but not the forest.  He gets that they are in this position because of private schools, expensive weddings, career decisions that didn't pan, and generally poor habits, but can't see his way past changing those habits in any way.   That said, it takes a lot to publish how badly you fucked up your finances and I hope someone can learn from this.

There is an additional article on the site talking about Americans and savings that doesn't let people off the hook so easily.

While not up to the standards of most folks meandering around this forum, it does note that Americans have chosen to spend this way and have chosen to put themselves in debt.
