Survived a weekend with zero cash
« on: September 08, 2015, 08:31:23 AM »
Last weekend NFC hiccuped and we weren't paid on Saturday as usual.  After checking online and with 2 friends we figured out we wouldn't be paid til Monday.  I howled for 5 minutes then buckled down to survive the next 48 hours. :-)  First I installed several PC games I had purchased but never played.  Sacred 2 wouldn't run I believe it has a defective disc. Bummer....After that I attempted Starcraft 1 which installed perfectly and I amused myself killing Zerg.  I also cleaned some crap off my hard drive and ate up all the leftovers I could locate.  Threw out some junk too and worked on my ongoing craft projects. I mostly stayed offline even turning off my phone.  I was actually thrilled I couldn't spend anything.
It was Monday before I knew it.  But I made it through....

Um.... congrats?  Try making not spending any money a frequent challenge.  I almost never run out of things I can do around the house and there's typically an amazing variety of free activities available regardless of where you live.  Most of us have several days worth of food in our fridges and pantries if we just get a little creative.

Take a look around the 'share your badassity' section and you'll find lots of great ideas for not spending money.

I usually try to spend next to nothing during the workweek if I can help it other than maybe subway and busfare back and forth to work if my transit benefit has run out.

Well, there's one situation where a credit card would certainly have been useful.  Whatever would have been charged on it could have been paid off once the paycheck situation got unsnarled.

Credit DOES have its uses, you know.  ;)

I couldn't seem to make it more than 10 hours into Sacred 2, I get lonely playing single player games.

Was it at least the Brood War expansion pack? Any Big Game Hunters? :)

Bravo! An unforseen glitch pushed you out of one of your comfort zones and you ran with it. I call that weekend a 48 hour victory!

I am playing the first part now moving onto Brood War once that is done.  The graphics are chunky but it is a better game than I gave it credit for years ago.  I usually prefer RPGs but RTS is a close second.  As for Sacred 2, I played Sacred 1 and adored it so at some point I will get another copy since they've got to be cheap by now and attempt to install it again or download it off Steam.

Good for you?  How was this an emergency?

You're running your bank account close enough that this even registered on your radar?  Methinks you need to actually read the site more.

I'm pretty confident I'd notice after 2-3 pay periods had gone by without being paid entirely, but if I weren't paid on Friday, and was instead paid on Monday, I'm about 99% sure I wouldn't even notice.

If I did notice, I've got plenty of spare (physical) cash laying around...

Worth noting official pay day for Feds is Thursday. I know some people get it as early as Saturday and I usually get it Monday but you shouldn't rely on it until Thursday.  But yes, I would notice far before the two or three pay checks someone suggested as all my automatic savings and payments come out on Thursday. I like my checking balance low. Prevents me from being tempted to spend!

Yeah what you said.  The lower my checking balance the better for me.  A few of my bills are auto pay such as my phone and Sharebuilder fees.  I did learn I ought to keep more things around to make a meal of such as pasta sauce or frozen meat mixes in case it happens again.  I had bits and pieces of things to eat as I call it.   Luckily I had made a huge pot of black eyed peas a few days before.
As a beginner Mustacher it will take me a while to be able to ignore paychecks.  Most of my investing, saving and debt repayment is done via financial allotment so those were't affected thankfully.

If this is a big change for you- congratulations.

But, quite honestly, 48 hours without spending money seems to be an awfully short amount of time.  You should practice having a lot more no-spend days. And then don't just shift the spending to another day.  Just don't spend it at all.

Good job! Sounds like you learned a lot.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
