Stuff You've Been Watching Since Ditching Cable?
« on: April 22, 2017, 03:28:55 PM »
I thought it would be fun to start a thread to discuss stuff you've been watching since ditching cable TV for an antenna and streaming services.

I'll start:

1.) UFC Fight Night on FOX: They show fights for free eight to ten times a year and I've really gotten into watching MMA as a result. It's really violent and bloody and so much fun to watch with friends while you eat homemade pizza and hoot and holler at the screen.

2.) The White Rabbit Project on Netflix: The Build Team from Mythbusters have their own show where they do science stuff and tell stories. My favorite episode is the one where they try to determine if they can imitate comic book superpowers with real life technology.

3.) Riverdale on The CW: It's basically Twin Peaks as told by the characters from Archie Comics and it's really twisted and messed up. A ton of fun to watch.

4.) Independent Lens on PBS: Every week or so, they show independent documentaries on various interesting subjects. My favorite so far was "Chuck Norris vs. Communism", which is the story of how some Romanians were inspired to overthrow their Communist government in the 1980s after watching smuggled VHS tapes of American movies.

5.) Iron Fist on Netflix: This is the latest of four Marvel TV series that Netflix has streamed so far (with the upcoming Defenders and The Punisher arriving over the next year). These shows are as good as anything you can see on premium cable with the added connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other Marvel shows. Iron Fist is really enjoyable if you like martial arts movies like the stuff Bruce Lee did back in the 1970s.

-watching my kids grow up
-watching sunsets, birds, and ocean waves
-seemingly endless hours/days of live concerts on  Youtube
-and filling in occasionally with Hulu TV shows

Fomerly known as something

Ted talks
I have an OTA (HD) DVR.  I record the news 3 times a day so I can virtually always catch the latest - I don't watch it all (sports and politics annoy me), I don't even watch each episode I record.
I record a few informative shows, like Dr Oz.  I only watch the ones with topics that interest me.
I record a handful of prime-time shows.  I like APB the best, but I worked in IT and it's getting unbelievable...
I record all the late night talk/entertainment shows - again, I only watch what interests me and don't watch every episode.  But in general, daytime TV annoys me.
I use titantv.com - it allows me to set what channels I get - and watch,  It will filter for just movies (or sports or a bunch of stuff) and shows their synopsis and rating.  There are LOTS of good, classic movies on the sub-channels (12.2, 18.3...).
I actively avoid watching 'live TV', because I can't skip the ads.
Occasionally I watch youtube - but it tends to be a time sink.

Sherlock on Netflix.  It's completely addictive.
