I remember getting "stimulus" checks back in the Bush presidency era, although i don't recall the reasoning behind them - maybe a general economic malaise . Perhaps $300 first time, then $400 2nd time, as a single person.  I can't exactly remember what i spent them on, i think one helped pay for airline tickets. I wasn't smart enough to invest them...

LOL.  Good one!

I was just thinking, the desire to just send people cash (instead of a payroll tax cut, which is stupid) is the first sign that the administration might be pulling their heads out of the asses and following something resembling common sense and logic.

Last time it was a payroll tax cut, the check was basically just an advance on the tax refund.  You settled up when you filed your taxes.

That's not the reason it's stupid. It's stupid b/c it doesn't help those not working, it is regressive, and it shortchanges the Social Security/Medicare fund.

This is really interesting. At the time, people were screaming about how bad the economy was, poor stock market performance, etc. Very similar to today. But today we can't remember much about it.

The troubles of today belong to today. They don't belong to tomorrow.

I'm reading the news and the politicians are debating back and forth if $1k is enough to help people.(rents, bills and such...)
I mean we all ready knew this but this fiasco just emphasize how the majority of Americans do not understand the meaning of having emergency savings.
A stimulus check isn't meant to pay your rent and bills. Its spending money to stimulate the economy.

I remember the last round of stimulus checks quite well, because I bought new carpet for the living room with it. We called it the “Thanks, Bush!” Rug. LOL

I remember Obama's Make Work Pay stimulus tax credit, but I had too much income, so I got a reduced payout.

If I ever got a stimulus check I'd just invest it. Money is for investing more so than spending. Now more than ever, I'm reluctant to spend.

Probably explains why I've never got a stimulus payment.

Maybe we need to have a forum stimulus check investment competition so that we can all get some individual stock choosing and market timing out of our systems!

No details but Trump and all the politicians seem to agree that a stimulus check of ~$1000 is the right thing to do.

and it shortchanges the Social Security/Medicare fund.

It never has before. The treasury issued new bonds and transferred them into the trust fund last time around.
