Staying in San Fran for 2 months - acommodation options?
« on: January 10, 2016, 04:37:50 PM »
Hi all,

Me and my girlfriend are planning on traveling to, and working from San Fran for about 2 months July/Aug this year. We currently live in Sydney, Australia.

We are looking for a small apartment to have to ourselves, with internet included. Are there other options I should look at aside from Air BnB?

What sort of costs would I be looking at in terms of accommodation? are there any particular areas you would recommend?

Thanks!

Hello,

Definitely try AirBnB but also consider shared home spaces. There are plenty of people who have excellent floor plans wherein you can keep your privacy but share a kitchen and common space.

I would check Craig'sList as many people who travel need to sublet their place for weeks at a time.

Consider staying in one of the cities betwix SF and Mountainview (such as Redwood city) with Caltrain access if you want something more affordable while still being able to check out what the Bay Area has to offer.

Research house sitting.  You can live three free for taking care of pets, plants and stuff.

Craigslist is great if you are already in town and can visit an apartment, but I would be VERY hesitant to set up a sublet over craigslist if you had to line up accomodations from Australia before your trip.  Too great a chance of getting scammed if you can't actually visit the apartment and meet the person or rental agency subletting it.  If you need to set up housing before you arrive in San Francisco I think you are better off with something like AirBNB or a vacation rental site so you can look up reviews.

Is your Sydney place nice?  Maybe you could set up a house swap.    You'd be really lucky to find the perfect timing for this but you should give it a try, you might end up with free!
