Splitting a job for baristaFIRE?
« on: June 17, 2022, 06:26:00 AM »
So heard recently from a fellow vagabond/quasi-FIRE person friend.  We went to school together, are buddies when we see each other (we live on opposite sides of the country).

We've off and on joked/not joked about trying to get a posse of people together to split a clinic together (we are acupuncturists- need some continuity to keep the patients going). Had some other colleague/friends initially interested, we've all talked about it here and there.

The other main two of our crew seem like they've opted to settle down in the last year or two and don't seem like they will be interested for the for the forseeable future.

Meanwhile my buddy and I are more and more wanderlusty...he "retired" during the pandemic but decided he wanted to work a bit again recently...and then is now wanderlusting to go again.  He is talking more seriously about getting a plan together where we split a job.  Hey, I'm open-minded and this sounds ideal to me.

We are both reasonably confident that either of the jobs we have currently our bosses (both chill people) might go for it.  Or we could just try to "interview together" for another position.  We both have similar treatment styles/same school we went to, and similar focus (able to treat in a fast-paced/affordable community style, or also work w/insurance patients/pain management, requires certain details to be followed...both of us have worked in full-on integrative Western medical clinics too, and we've both worked in ritsy spas on cruise ships).  Both of us currently have jobs that are a mix of the community style/better paying insurance people.  AKA- we feel good about providing affordable service to those who can't afford more, and we also feel adequately-compensated by the insurance people.

Before we get too deep down this rabbit hole I'm wondering if anyone here has tried something similar like "splitting" a job, and how that worked out for you?  Pros/cons?  Any stuff you got down on paper that you recommend?  Daydreaming here but with a more serious edge than before let's say.

Is this someone you want to hangout/travel/vacation with?  Splitting a job could make that harder.  If someone is hiring you  both (rather than just renting you space) they may not want both of you off at the same time.  In fact, they might look to the one not on vacation to pick up some of the slack.  I'm not sure what the usual arrangement is with acupuncturist.

My mother shared a job for about 15 years.  She was a nutritionist working with at risk babies and their parents.  She worked Monday, Wednesday and every other Friday and the other woman worked Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday.  But they could swap days occasionally as needed. They were part of a larger organization operating out of a university so did not have responsibility for billing, etc. It worked out well for everyone.

My SIL is a teacher. She split a job with another teacher for years and loved it, until her teaching partner quit and the district wouldn't allow job splitting after that.
