A couple interesting resources I've run across on this topic:

For my part, after a reddit thread (can't find it...), I most recently bought a set of ralph lauren cotton sheets, 400 thread count and fairly thick/stiff ($45 I think? At TJ Maxx). They're perfectly comfortable and feel just like my old set- which my husband and I used for seven years of weekly washes and only got rid of since we went from a full to queen size bed- it's still in good shape. We use standard cotton most of the year, and flannel in the colder section, probably an 8/4 months split?

We go through flannel a little faster, which isn't surprising since I wash and use a dryer on every week! And flannel gets threadbare and rips eventually. But still, I usually get 3-5 years out of flannel, and I buy cheap sets ($20).

I've slept on some *very* swank bedding, although not linen, and frankly I didn't care for it that much. (Silk, and another time some sort of extra special egyptian cotton?) For everyone saying it makes such a difference- what was your adjustment period? Or did you like it straight away? Not that I ever see myself getting a Mega Swanky bedding set, but my MIL buys insanely pricey gifts for us sometimes.

Just spent 6k on a new bed, old one is over 15 years old. I figure you spend 1/3 of you life there better make it comfortable. I could of spent far less but what is a good night sleep worth. To me my productivity from better sleep is a quick ROI.

If I keep bed for 15 years like previous one my cost is $33 a month for 15 years of ownership.

Some may say this is crazy but everyone has different values.

Our bed is three 2” memory foam mattresses collected over the years ($300) and a $150 steel frame (replaced the wood one that lasted close to a decade). We’ve been looking at a new king size set but they are too much for essentially a wood platform.

I'm in the camp that thinks that is an insane amount of money for sheets.

I understand spending based on quality, but I don't think you could ever convince me that sheets are an area where quality matters that much.

This thread reminds me of the people who try to justify an $800 blender by saying that they burn our normal $30 blenders every six months.  I call user error.  If you're going through sheets every twelve months, you're doing something horribly horribly wrong.

I'm not disputing that $500 sheets are better than $50 sheets.  I expect that they are.  They're just not 10x better.

You know what's even worse than buying $500 sheets?  Buying $500 sheets and then bragging about it on the internet to a bunch of people celebrating their collective frugality.  It another environment it would just be gauche conspicuous consumption, but here it's definitely trolling.  The only thing missing was a link to your e-commerce site selling $500 linen sheets.

Hey OP, I know a great vegan forum where you can go brag about how much you love veal.  Go ahead and try the same argument there that you used here, the one about how "it's only 12 cents of dead baby animal per day, it feels like it's worth ten times that!"

@sol
That is so rude.  There are a few things in life worth spending money on.  I will list a few examples discussed plus some of my own:
Good safe tires that handle water well, or snow tires in the winter in the needed regions.
Good brakes
Comfortable shoes that fit and work with your body.
A good mattress that works for your body
Appropriate winter clothing for the season or for the given activity
Food without chemicals and preservatives

Something you spend 6-9 hours a day in deserves comfort.  Especially if it helps you get better sleep in a shorter time.  Personally I would not spend $500 on sheets but have spent significantly more than that on a good mattress and think it was one of the better purchases we have made that positively affected our lives.  Spend a few weeks in a good bed and maybe you will be singing a very different tune. Maybe you will be more accepting of other people's views.

What you said isn't face punching.  It was simply rude for the sake of being rude.  Apparently others in this thread believe good bedding is worth spending a little extra on.  Maybe, just maybe you are wrong and OP deserves an apology.

Personally, I think those of us who remember when this forum wasn't full people willing to pat each other on the back for their consumer sucka spending deserve an apology for having to listen to this sort of excuse. I was cheering as I read Sol's post - way too little face pinching going on these days in topics like this.

And to op for your response to the above post and willingness to take Sol's criticism in the spirit it was offered: bravo. Still seems like the bedding was overly consumer sucka to me, though! :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
