Songs that make you think about FIRE
« on: May 23, 2013, 02:00:09 PM »
I could probably come up with a few, but since having kids "Cats in the Cradle" is probably the one that most affects me because one of my goals for FIRE (and more the FI part) is to never be in situation where I don't have time for my kids or have to choose between some obligation and them (sure there will be times, but it won't be the majority of the time).

I always liked the song but until I had kids it didn't have much meaning to me, and the song's view on going full circle is just sad to me.

Here is a youtube link with the lyrics.

Anybody else have a song that comes to mind that kicks up the FIRE feeling a bit.

Obviously TMBG Never Go To Work as has been mentioned here before, but more in the vein of your suggestion, 100 Years by Five For Fighting.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

"Every Penny Fed Car" by Modest Mouse. Some of their early work but the lyrics are about pouring money into a car and it won't take take you where you want to go.

I love that song.

My first thought was Big Money by Rush... but my first thought is always Rush.

For some reason my first thought was of Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away".

How about "If I Had a million dollars" by the Bare Naked Ladies?

This part especially, which strikes me as mustachian:

If I had a million dollars
We wouldn’t have to eat Kraft dinner
But we would eat Kraft dinner

Of course we would, we’d just eat more
And buy really expensive ketchups with it
That’s right, all the fanciest Dijon ketchups

Soo... you play bass?

One that comes to mind for me is Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More by the Allman Brothers.

Maybe we should put together a FIRE playlist on Soundcloud or something similar. ^^

I was going to say country music in general (outdoors! yeah!), but then realized I'd have to exclude all the songs about working hard, or being broke, or driving trucks. Hm.

That would still leave you plenty of songs left about heartache, being on the road, and death.

no.  But when Rush comes to town (or near town) I take two days off of work as a 'religious holiday.'
