So about those goals....
« on: July 03, 2013, 03:56:57 AM »
6 months ago at the start of the year many people here set some goals, some targets, some things they wanted to do etc etc.

So half way through the year how are we all going? Are you succeeding? Are you setting bigger goals?

For me, my little net worth stash is up $25k since 1 January, but a lot of my projected yearly increase is back-ended into the next 6 months (could be up another $35k by then). I'm also setting a new goal to move to buy a better apartment in the next 12 month, and keep my current place as a rental.

How is the journey going for you guys & girls?

My long term goal is €2500 of passive income per month.

So far so good, I reached €1100 this month.

I ended up clarifying my savings goal as the year went on. I'm now aiming to stash $30k this year. The only wrinkle in the plan may be that my partner needs some dental work and I might need to help her pay. But it's good to aim for a high goal, even if you fall short.

Can't complain.

Ok, so here's mine....

-Increase Net Worth from Slightly negative to $50k+
-Get completely out of debt
-Bike to work 98% of the time
-Put less than 100 mi/month on our car except trips home to see our parents
-Get married!!! :)

Well, as of June 2013, we're up to $40k, so we're well on track. My new goal is $75k by year end.

I have one lingering student loan for $19,051. It's on IBR through Feb 2014 with $0 payments & the loan is subsidized, so 0 interest is accruing. Come January, I'm going to enroll in 6 credits/semester using my tuition benefits at work, so it will be put back into deferment. I have the cash to pay it off if I wanted to though, so it's as good as gone as far as I'm concerned.

Biking to work, not doing as well as planned. When I wrote these, winter had been kind to me. Come January, Chicago winter hit hard & I drove to work every day until April. Since then, I've been doing some combination of walking, biking, and taking the CTA almost every day. I probably drive once a month, max. Biking is good, but I think I like walking to work better most days actually. So fail on the goal, but I'm pretty happy with the progress still. And my legs look HAWT! :)

I haven't been tracking our car mileage as much as planned, but I'd say we're driving a little more than planned. Maybe this month we can start getting on top of that a little better.

Anddd I'm now a married lady on lock down, so that happened! :)

1. Try at least one new recipe a week (work my way through a cook book), helping me to expand my cooking skills and decrease the temptation to buy prepared foods.
2. Bike to work post-move at least 2-3 days a week working my way up to 100%.
3. Max out 2013 Roth (Check!)
4. Volunteer for at least two new organizations (signed up for one already)
5. Ask for a promotion/raise at work.
6. Host a game night at least 4 times.: 2 down, 2 to go!
7. Stretch more days than not (really need to work on this!)
8. Increase net worth by at least 20k.: 6k so far (roommates happened later than I would have liked), but depending on the market I might get to 15k (the new goal).

I am on  track to ESR at the beginning of next year and escape what has quickly become a complete nuthouse.  Fingers remain crossed that things will pan out.

increased net worth by ~80k YTD ignoring primary residence, bumped savings from ~30% of gross to ~40%
Increased my value on the job market, started looking at some passive income sources outside my investment portfolio.
Was hoping for ~80k in savings and ~50k in portfolio growth for all of 2013 so seem to be on track, with the savings side actually coming up a bit, possibly 100-120k range at this rate. portfolio growth who knows tho, probably shouldnt have made a goal for market return as thats a little silly

Finished grad school and have already met this year's target for net worth, so have revised upwards.  Those are the two big goals for the year.  I'm giving myself a break from grad school before I start adding on other activities/money-making schemes.

Can you add a "win-some-lose-some" option?  Most people made multiple goals and it's hard to make a sweeping statement about success or failure.

Increased net worth by 1 year's living expenses(front loaded bonus and tax return, otherwise I have ~50% savings rate).
I haven't biked to work yet, but I've biked to numerous social outings.  I'm set for my first 13 mile commute on Friday, so I'm making progress.  I just need to put the rack on the bike!
I've only bought lunch at work maybe 5 times so far this year.
I had to stop training for my marathon due to a foot injury, but I've just started picking up road cycling in preparation for my commute.  I've probably been riding 100 miles/week equivalent recently - though foolishly on a stationary bike due to a few unique situations.
So mostly victories or partial victories.

I would imagine if there was an option that said "I'm on track to meet some goals, but not others" almost everyone would pick it (because no one is 100% perfect, nor is anyone 100% incompetent), and the poll would quickly become meaningless.

It's asking overall: are you meeting, exceeding, or not meeting your goals.  You'll have to decide for yourself where you fall on that if you're meeting some but not others.

For example if, out of 7 goals, you're exceeding 5, meeting 1, and failing 1, I'd put exceeding.  If there was an option to "meet some, but not others" and you'd pick that with a scenario of 5 exceeds out of 7, that probably shows it's a bad option to put in the poll, as everyone will pick that.

Reading through some of the posts on this thread confirms what I thought. When you do commit wholeheartedly to something you absolutely smash it.

Goals have always been a problem for me, in the sense that whenever I set one I keep thinking "yes but surely you can do better". You need to set them so you generally fall on the right side of "consistent success" rather than "consistently falling short". I suppose it's just the psychology of it.

At my work we have the concept of stretch targets. The normal budget is set for each department which is required to be met but on top is a "stretch" allocation. Meeting the stretch is quite a task but it's great to have it there, gives everyone something to work towards, without making people feel like they've failed for not meeting it.

This seems to be the year that everything breaks down.  My goals are pretty aggressive during the best of times so it's been a bit frustrating falling behind.  Have already chocked this year up to a rebuilding year so things will last another 10 years with min maintenance.

Budget-wise I am on track. Investment-wise I need to increase my annual passive income by another $2,700 before the end of the year. It's going to be challenging but I think I'll make it.

My ultimate goal, the one which will let me ER, is to achieve $2500 monthly in dividend income. It appears I am on course to get there by the end of the year. I figure about by about March or April I will be informing my overseers that my services are no longer going to be provided.

Hard not to get excited about how different my life is about to become. Might have to start a blog. ;)

I didn't set on here on the forum, since I only joined in February. But we'd set ourselves a goal of getting our temporary certificate of occupancy and moving into the house this summer and of paying off the land loan before the maturity date in summer 2014. We got the full CO, not a temporary, the first week of May, and then paid off the loan and moved in the week of Memorial Day.

I am about 6 months away from quitting.  It is strange, almost like planning my own death.
