SIM Card for Europe
« on: April 15, 2024, 05:52:35 PM »
Does anyone have a recommendation for a SIM card that will work for a 10 day trip to Germany?

I have a prepaid US carrier plan that I've confirmed will not work outside the US. My carrier also doesn't offer any sort of foreign travel upgrade service unless I change to a much more expensive plan.

I am also pretty tech un-savvy and haven't traveled to the EU before, so this whole concept of SIM card usage overseas confuses me. But, I will need limited data usage outside of Wifi range in order to score a deal for a really cheap public transportation ticket that apparently will only work on my phone.

Does your phone accept an eSIM? If so, it's as easy as ordering one from Orange, for example, and loading it when you land.

Do be sure the phone itself will be compatible with the frequencies used where you are traveling.  It isn't the big deal it used to be, but particularly if you hacpve an uncommon or cheaper phone, it may be a reason why it is so.

As long as your phone is unlocked, just get a SIM card.

When we go to Ireland we get SIM cards with unlimited calling, texting and Internet for 20 euros per month.

Thanks all. This is extremely helpful.

Phone's SIM is unlocked, it will accept an eSIM, and it looks like it is fine for 4G in Germany but it is a poor 5G phone (hopefully not a big issue).

Will follow advice above. Grealy appreciated.

I’d look for a cheap esim plan in Germany. That way u can still receive texts for free from the US.

Other option is to go to one of the mobile phone booths selling plans to tourists at the airport when u arrive and an agent will likely be happy to help to get u set up (not usually the cheapest option).

Airalo is a more expensive esim plan than local plans but very easy interface. I use it when convenience is important.

I usually just get a cheap eSim from Holafly a few days before I travel then activate it on touchdown.
