Sometimes in all the talk of doom and gloom we forget that through the collective action of billions of people, we are making the world better in small ways every day. Sometimes it is two steps forward and one step back (and more rarely, it's a big step back), but progress continues. So I am dedicating this thread to discussions of good (non-partisan) news stories.
Here is a story about how the pandemic has caused an increase in working from home, which has positive effects on carbon footprints, traffic and productivity:
https://www.resilience.org/stories/2020-05-21/working-from-home-during-the-pandemic-has-environmental-benefits-but-we-can-do-even-better/While I don't think the office as a concept will die, I do think this work from home shift will have permanent implications. I personally never intend to accept a job that will require 5 days a week in office that is more than 30 minutes from my house ever again. (I'll work in the office in the satellite cities near me, or if I go down to the CBD I will negotiate a couple work from home days from the bat or not take the job.) So I do expect a long-term reduction of my carbon footprint, and improvement to my quality of life and health (more time for exercise, less time sitting).
