Should my wife get a Chase Sapphire Reserve card?
« on: August 07, 2017, 08:13:56 PM »
First off I signed up for this card and got the 100k miles bonus and now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not getting one for the wife.  Currently she is only at 2/24, but will mostly get another southwest card to get the companion pass before the end of the year.  I've been holding out on signing her up for the Reserve card hoping by some miracle they up the sign up bonus a bit like they did the southwest cards last month.  Also after looking into it they changed the rules on the Reserve card.  You no longer get the $300 travel credit per calendar year.  It states you now get it every 12 months after the anniversary sign up date of the card.  Looks like they closed this loop hole.  We have travel planned for October and would use the $300 credit right away.  Also my wife needs a TSA pre check that I was planning on buying anyways.....  So after you subtract that from the $450 annual fee it looks like 50k UR points will cost me $65.  I just wished they'd bump the bonus or at least offer you a referral bonus like they do on the regular Sapphire card.  So what do yall think?  Do it or is there a better card out there?

wow, so they closed the 300 travel credit loophole? Bummer! I signed my husband and I up last October and was able to use 600 that fall and got a new 600 that spring. Bummer! They are really catching on to us churners, I wonder if we have much time left?

Since I have done enough at chase for now, I am actually going to try out the citi premier. You get 50,000 points for just a 4,000 3 mo spend. no travel credit but the annual fee is waved for the first year, that makes the 50,000 points all yours. You can redeem it for full value for gift cards and a few other things. They do not offer straight cash back reward for the full value. Only issue with Citi thank you points. IF you both do this you can rack up 100,000 which you can redeem with the travel partners at more than full value. 1.2x I think.

Taken from the chase site....

A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for purchases in the travel category, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $300. Annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. (For applications submitted before May 21, 2017, annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first December statement date of that same year, and the 12 billing cycles starting after your December statement date through the following December statement date each year.) Call the number on the back of your card to see when you are eligible for your next $300 Annual Travel Credit.

Have you used up all your UR points? If not, remember that you can transfer them to your spouse so if she gets the card before you cancel yours.  That way as a couple you'll continue to redeem at 1.5 rate.  That's basically my plan.  I was 7/24 so couldn't get the card but I"ll be 4/24 a couple of months before DHs annual fee is due.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
