Should I go back to school to finish my BA?
« on: January 12, 2016, 02:04:02 PM »
Ok, so here it goes. This is my first post on the forum but I have been reading MMM and the forum for over a year. I am 25, married, with a little one on the way!! I have 0 debt except my mortgage and my wife and I are pretty good with our money habits. I currently have my AA (two year degree), work for a school district doing any and all things for there athletic teams, make about 46k a year. My current job is extremely laid back and have no issues with it, and i get free health benefits for my entire family (medical, dental, vision). Also, since its threw the school district it is pretty safe of my getting fired or laid off. In all pretty sweet job that I am lucky to have.

here is the kicker, the school district will pay for my last two years of college if i agree (in good faith) to work for them for at least a year after i receive my degree, however if no positions are available and they do not need me then i would be free to do as i wish. Witch is basically them saying there not guaranteeing me a job.

So should i go back to school on someone else's dime to potentially not be able to score a better job at the end?
Is going threw with work + school worth the less amount of time i will spend with my child?

I was thinking about getting my degree in Finance or Economics considering I enjoy the topics and read Finance blogs for fun. but any idea of the odds of scoring a job with those outside of the school district?

O and i live about 2 hours north of LA so theres not like a huge corporation headquarters anywhere near but its definite still a  highly populated area.

Free education is, in my mind, a no brainer.  What's the worst case scenario, your resume looks better but goes unused? Do it.

ya i know i probably should but i just would hate to spend so much time away from the family (classes and studying) for something that may not materialize. and i mean more money would be nice but its definitely not a need as long as i have my wife and kid.

maybe i would feel a lot more motivated if i could actually figure out what i would want to do post degree...

This is a no brainer.  Do it.
It's never going to be easier than it is now.

I just finished my AS (only had a HS diploma and a certificate prior) last month, company paid. It will do nothing for my current position. But I've been at the company for almost 17 years, so it helps to "freshen up" my resume should I need it down the road, it also makes me look "better" if I wind up applying for my boss's job in a few years when she retires (her job does not require a degree of any sort, but I figure having one certainly won't hurt).

I started back to college when my daughter was 8 months old. I was nursing her and working full time on top of class/studying. I'm not the most ambitious or hard working person...so if I can do it anyone can. What I will say is that it will likely be MUCH easier to do it now when your child is an infant/toddler than it will be later when they are an older toddler or school aged child.  The older they are the more of your full attention they need/want. It was the last 6 months of school that was hardest for me, my daughter was 3 going on 4 and wanted ALL of my attention. By the time I put her to bed at 8 PM I was exhausted, but still had 2 hours of school work to do most nights.  When she was an infant and young toddler, it was a breeze to fit in school work during her nap times and she went to bed at 7 or 7:30 - you wouldn't thing 30-60 minutes makes a big different but for me at least, it really did. And she didn't nap much past age two so that shot to shit the couple of hours of studying I could do on the weekends during the day (my husband works nights and weekends so he's always asleep during the day).

Because it is much harder now (as well as some other things going on in other areas of my life), I'm taking at least a 2-3 year break before I even consider if I want to go back and complete my BA. By then I'll be early to mid-40's and since I hope to retire by 60 I don't know if it will be worth it from a job perspective, although I may still do it just to fulfill a personal goal of being a college graduate.  You're in a much better spot, you've already got the AA/AS, you just need a few more years for the BA/BS.

So, in short - I feel a degree is better to have than not, and it's easier to do when the kid(s) are super little than when they are older and want (and deserve) more of your time and attention.  The next 2-3 years are going to FLY by, I swear. If you don't do it now, 3 years will pass...and I promise you...you'll still be wondering if you should be going back for that degree. Only it's going to be a lot harder with an older child (and maybe a 2nd on the way, who knows!). Just do it and be done with it.

First of all, congratulations for all that you have achieved so far. I agree with the others that going back to school will give you more future options. As far as coursework goes, I would like to suggest that you consider a course in English Composition. You are clearly an intelligent and articulate person. However, there are a few errors in your post, especially spelling. Perhaps you were typing quickly, and we all know what autocorrect can do. Whatever the reason, learning how to best express your ideas in writing could open all kinds of doors for you.

more english classes would probably be a good idea. spelling has always been problematic for me. when i was in first threw probably third grade my elementary school implemented something called whole word language or something and dropped phonics. Stupid idea and many kids in my class still have problems spelling to this day. I wonder if it is to late to teach myself how to do it the other way....

Im not a grammar nazi I promise but it just bugs me way too much:
It's THROUGH not THREW.

Sorry, hard to convey tone through the internet but I mean it in the least snarkiest way possible :)

I think that you should go back and get your BA under those circumstances. The school is paying for it and it would help you long term were you to find yourself in seacrh of other opportunities/promotions. Do it while your kid is small too, sounds counterintuitive but kids require more as they grow (sports, homework help, feeling "bored", etc).

I say yes to the degree. Your job may be fine now but there is no guarantee that it will stay that way--you may think that working for a school district is a safe job but during a downturn there are no sacred cows and the non-teaching staff is the easiest to cut. At 46K/year you are probably quite a long way from RE and a free college degree is a good investment to enhance prospects while you are in the earning years. Of course you want to maximize time with your family but the opportunity to finish school before children is not on the table anymore for you, so might as well knock this out now while you have the chance. The previous poster is right--it only gets more challenging as the kids get older and need more of your time. My father was in graduate school until I was three and our relationship is just fine.

I could list a million different reasons why this is a good idea and not a single reason why it is not a good idea.  I get the whole time away from the family thing but education is key to every part of your life.  It is safe to say that your investment now will be better for your family later.  I have been an executive recruiter for 20+ years and not that you necessarily want to be an executive someday but the quality of the school DOES matter.  If you invest the time - invest in getting into the best school that you can.  Your BA will open doors for you throughout your professional life.

I was a headhunter and these days there are so many jobs (even entry level or clerical/admin) that require a Bachelors degree.  These days it is almost the same as a HS diploma was many years ago.  You won't regret it!

If your current job is so laid back, any chance of continuing it part-time and studying part time?
