Shift Work to a Coworker but I'm still on the hook?
« on: April 05, 2017, 09:45:28 AM »
So I just had a meeting with my boss.  I said my plate is full and I need a part time resource to help offload some of my work that has seasonal peaks to level out my workload.

He said I could train coworker X to do the work, but that he would still come to me if something was not done or done incorrectly.

So I'm now wondering if I should just suck it up and keep doing the work myself or spend time now to train my coworker and double check his work for x period of time?

Doesn't seem fair to let my coworker claim credit for doing the work but I'm still responsible if it's not done correctly.

Your boss is an idiot. And not doing his job.

Part of his job is making sure that your workload is reasonable. Also part of his job is appropriately managing all employees who report to him. He's doing neither.

If I have someone helping me with work, then yes, I'm training and providing some supervision, but if they mess up it's not ultimately my fault. They messed up. Now, I may have messed up as well if I didn't identify the mistake and I was supposed to, but that's a different issue.

Does your boss view you as a potential future manager?  It sounds like he is placing you as accountable for the work of a subordinate (coworker X).  If you screw something up, your boss is on the hook with his boss, I suspect he's doing the same with you.  He may fit the description from Sibley, but its impossible for me to say this without knowing more about the situation.

That is so stupid. If someone else is doing work tasks, and you are not that person's boss, you have little to no responsibility for this person's performance. The only responsibility you might have would be in training and the effects of training.

What kind of organization is this? Private? Public? Large? Small?
