September rent check hasn't been cashed yet - so annoying
« on: September 28, 2015, 10:01:55 AM »
I find this to be very annoying.  I also don't understand why they haven't cashed my rent check yet, just find it strange.  If they don't need my rent money, I will be happy to live here for free. lol

I was asked to send my rent check to my landlords daughter instead of her on Sept 1st.  I did.  And the check is still floating somewhere.  I checked with them 3 times this month to make sure they received a check and that they will cash it.  I got some sort of wacky response that this daughter is in Philadelphia most of this month (I mailed the check to address in Philly) and won't be able to deposit it until she gets back to NY.  She has a Chase account.  What the heck, there are plenty of Chase banks in Philly.

I already told them that from now on I am sending my rent to them via Chase Quick Pay, so this should be an issue anymore.  At least they agreed to this.

Why does it matter? You should have mentally deducted the money already. Annoying? Maybe, but not really affecting your life.

As a mustachean you should be happy as you collect interest while you wait...the longer it takes for them to use your money the better.  Too bad you "fixed" that non-problem for the future.

I did deduct the amount from the balance (I use YNAB), but I still find this annoying.  Plus, my checking account doesn't earn any interest so no benefit to me.

I agree, that's really annoying.  I'd rather know my landlord is competent and on top of everything rather than earn even $0.05 from their inattention.  It's nice to be flexible and help them out by routing your check somewhere else, but at this point they easily could have cashed your check as usual and sent the money wherever it needed to go without you being involved.  I guess they are probably annoyed by the daughter too, but it's not appropriate to bring that up with their tenant.

I used to deal with this in the previous place I rented. Landlord would take forever to cash the check. I would be 1) paranoid that she did not get my check or 2) it (visually) messes up my accounting for the month.

Yes and yes

Just got a txt from landlord that check was deposited this past weekend.  Hopefully this problem will be resolved going forward altogether.

Why don't you just wire the money conveniently from an banking app on your phone to you landlord, instead of writing and mailing checks?!

I have not used YNAB before, so I am curious—is there not a way to manually add a check / debit card / cash transaction & then reconcile it later?

Personally, I use an old-fashioned checkbook, so I rarely notice / care about the timing of my checks clearing. If the issue persists, consider keeping a manual ledger =)

Than's what I will be doing going forward.  Didn't expect depositing rent check to be such a chore for the receiving party, so I didn't think of this before.

Yes, there is a way to add transaction and that's what I've done.  It is still annoying to have money sitting in the bank.  Plus, I am in the process of changing banks so that's another thing to keep track of for uncleared transactions.

It should all be resolved soon.  They deposited the check this past Saturday and I will making electronic transfer going forward.

The only thing I am concerned about with an uncashed check is that the vendor never received it AND charges me a late fee.

This happened recently & fortunately I had used my bank's Bill Pay which had a record of the check having been sent. So this is another reason to avoid having to fill out a paper check, spend a stamp, & mail it. The vendor took off the late fee after I sent it the proof of payment & the bank replaced the check at no charge.

You do have to schedule a Bill Pay in advance to allow for processing time, usually 5 days. Some banks deduct your money out of your account as soon as you schedule the payment. Schwab Bank deducts it on the day you specify that the check is to be delivered.

I hate checks and am notoriously bad at depositing them.  Then people call with concern that it wasn't received, I say it was, then proceed to forget again to deposit it. I really have to be better about this due to consideration and risk of check being returned because people can't mange their money.

LOL  Agreed, but these types of things make the charts on my spending graphs look as if some months there is more spending than others.  I've become so obsessed with my graphs and trying to get monthly bar charts to look more even that I've started paying my mortgages and HOAs late so that they don't clear the bank until after the 1st of the month.  It's still always within the grace period, but I used to make sure everything was paid up before the first of each month.

I don't understand why it matters.

You paid the rent, your obligation is done.
Who cares when they cash it?

As long as they have acknowledged receipt, you're fine.

I like auto pay from the bank. Although my mortgage is paid via that and the first year I noticed "late payments" on the year end statement and came unglued.

They fixed it, but good thing to check on this kinda stuff.

You could just do what I do, and date the transaction as if it happened on the 1st, even if it clears before or after. I mean, in the end, does it really matter?

LOL, not likely to happen since you keep bugging them to cash that check already:)

In todays world it always surprises me when a payment or deposit takes forever. If it can be done instantly, why wouldn't you? A linked account transfer I set up from my bank to my credit union literally takes 7-10 days.
I'm always tempted to pick it up in cash and deposit it myself for same day gratification:) ... and in my case I do lose the love-interest.

I am amazed at all the people who do balance their checkbooks every day, every transaction. Yes I do reconcile our accounts once a month, but my husband and I rarely use checks and as there are 2 people using the checking account. we more go by an organic, what's the level in checking and go by that. Also if I have excess in checking I may transfer more to savings. So this would definitely annoy me, having to keep a mental note of deducting that amount until it is processed.

Way back when, when transactions were done more by checks, our landlord said didn't get our check. So I went by office to give them another check, and had them swear not to deposit "old" check if it ever showed up. Needless to say they then deposited both checks and got fees from our bank. I'm really glad of the instant or close to instant electronic debits, and not needing to drop off or mail physical checks for 95% of bills.

When I last rented, the corporation took 12 post-dated cheques and I got a receipt. If they didn't cash them, their fault.  But no problems.  However, it was a corporation handling thousands of rentals, so they had a system.  A smaller landlord situation needs to still be organized.
My mortgage is direct payment, so goes like clockwork.  Just from what I see online, in some ways banking is easier in the U.S. but in other ways it is easier here in Canada.  And on a tangent, banks here seem to be more up to date in terms of chip and tap technology.

Besides losing the time value of money, you risk returned check fees & losing the payment itself the longer an undeposited check ages.
These days most banks have mobile deposit, which saves making a deposit trip & works instantly. You no longer need a brick & mortar bank for routine transactions.

My first landlord would take forever to cash checks. I was married to my ex then, and he was terrible with money. This caused all sorts of problems for me.

When we split, and I got my own apartment, I talked to my new landlord about it. He said he always took the rent checks from his apartments to the bank on the 5th (after that anyone who hadn't paid got a late fee), and even offered to amend the lease that if it didn't get deposited I got 10% off my rent for the month. Of course he only said that because he knew that it would never happen.
