Selling Wood Decor - Should I sell a how to?
« on: June 04, 2016, 02:37:59 PM »
My wife and I started a side hustle in September making wood state decor. It's allowed my wife to work from home, although it's delayed FI I fully believe it's worth it.

So here's my idea;

One of the items we make is a wood guestbook, and I know there are many DIYers (like myself) out there that wouldn't pay amount we charge. Would it be prosperous or harmful to create a downloadable PDF costing ~$10 that would be a complete how to of how to make our items and adding it to our website and Etsy shop?

Pros:
-Passive income
-Drives more traffic to a dedicated "how to" page on our website
-Hopefully people see the amount of tools and time required and just buy one from us

Cons:
-Potential loss of income
-Potential increased competition

I think it would be a net zero proposition. The people who want to buy from you will just do it. The people who want to do it for themselves will look at your work and figure it out. A few people may buy instructions, but probably not many. I also think that the work is good enough that you shouldn't make it seem achievable.

Thanks Reynolds531!

Thanks for the input. "I also think that the work is good enough that you shouldn't make it seem achievable." I never thought about it from that perspective, and it makes a lot of sense put that way.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
