Screenwriters’ Strike Ends: AI full steam ahead?
« on: September 25, 2023, 08:12:24 AM »
I read the story on the strike (congrats writers) but didn’t get a solid feel for how the anti-AI contingent on the team made out. It appears to me it’s full steam ahead for the studios.

It look like if the studios use AI they must identify the work as AI-generated, and the writers need to be involved, be compensated, and get credit as co-authors of the work. Sounds good for the writers, right?

But what if the studios use 20 writers today for a particular show, and decide to drop the headcount to 1 AI and 5 writers?

Maybe I’m missing something, but isn’t this just a long-term win for the studios? I mean, they HAVE to have someone running the AIs…why not call her a writer and full steam ahead?

Details of the agreement won't be announced until Tuesday - And while I assume that AI will be used in some way, I haven't seen anything solid. There are rumors, but info for ratification isn't out yet.

Certainly.  The writers will get screwed, will be told to "learn to code" or something, and life will go on, with even crappier, more predictable, more recycled shows than the previous decade.

There's nothing much of value on TV or streaming services to watch anymore, why bother?  You'll miss out on the latest formulatic super hero movies, such a loss.  Watch older movies, or indie films.  There is no shortage of well written, well acted older movies and musicals (I have a soft spot for anything Dick Van Dyke is part of), and plenty of well written foreign or indie films that, unlike modern Hollywood, can actually pace a movie to the finish, instead of having to cram absurdity upon absurdity in the last 30 minutes to get the movie to resolve all they've started.

I don't think anyone really cared this time.  Unfortunately, this is probably not due to a vast reduction in screen hours. :(

The NYT has an opinion piece summarizing the AI elements of the deal and discussing the precedent it sets:

And here’s the summary from the WGA site: https://www.wgacontract2023.org/the-campaign/summary-of-the-2023-wga-mba

My net on AI: Get used to it. It’s going to play a large part in entertainment going forward!
