Reversed payment of online order
« on: May 20, 2025, 02:34:48 PM »
I wanted to buy a particular puzzle for my mom’s birthday and found it a few months ago online. I didn’t purchase at the time because I wanted it shipped directly to her address when it was closer to the date. By the time that happened, I found out it was discontinued, so I looked for another website that had it in stock, which ended up being Toytooth.com. It has a large selection and professional site, warehouse location in Texas, so I ordered. This was 8:00 pm on a Saturday night. I was surprised to get an automated email 1 minute after, saying it had already been shipped. Worried it might not actually be available, due to the weird shipping email, I called Monday to confirm. It connected me to a calling center with directories for 4 different companies. Selectiing the one for Toytooth, I talked to someone with an Indian accent. He assured me my order has already been shipped, but wouldn’t provide tracking info.

10 days later, my mom’s birthday had passed and she didn’t receive anything. I tried calling the company back to inquire or cancel, but just ringed without any response. Suspecting I might have been scammed, I started looking up reviews of Toytooth. Some good, some bad, with a surprising number saying they never received their item. I then went through my credit card online account and requested a charge reversal. It was granted quickly, which I was thankful for because I had never dealt with that before.

A few days later, I got an email from Toytooth. They asked me to cancel the charge reversal so they can do the refund themselves. There was an apology that my package must have been lost in transit. I haven’t responded. Today I received another request. Does this sound like a scam?  Once I cancel my reversal, I assume they’ll just repeat the potentially false shipment process. Is there further action I can take to report them, even though I have no evidence of intentional wrongdoing?

I'd tell them you'll cancel the reversal when your mom receives the puzzle or AFTER they issue a refund. If they couldn't be bothered to let you know the item was delayed or out of stock, I wouldn't take the risk that they'll do the right thing now.

Thanks. This makes sense overall. However, if they simply refund, and I cancel the reversal, then doesn’t that reward their behavior? I get the feeling that if they accumulate enough charge reversals, there might be some penalty towards them. A lower credit rating as a business, etc. I don’t know anything about this, just guessing.

edited to add-- I'm also not interested in having them ship a puzzle since I already found another from Ebay and bought it the same day I did the reverse charge.  I would think if the company had integrity, they would offer to just ship it complimentarily anyway though.

It's not your problem anymore. Disregard and move on. You have the email trail you need if anyone questions why you reversed it.
