More Education!
« on: April 27, 2014, 07:44:28 AM »
Reality slammed into me a couple months ago with the realisation that as a person barely reaching 20, I already lost the ability to attain a physical education. I am the sole care giver to my sick elderly mustachian mother in her 60's. Well of course I don't need to work but extra money wouldn't hurt a bit.

I realised it was basically impossible for me not only to get a physical job but to even earn a physical education anymore as the sole care giver, which created this awkward slump I 'was' in but of course I am a mini mustachian so got to keep fighting!

What woke me up was how I remembered an MMM article on 'TreeHouse' and I realised that 'technically' my education didn't have to end and in fact I could simply just do it online. After all I am home bound with the internet at my disposal.

Going through a list of what MMM had recommended for Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), I wanted to know what other MOOCs others would recommend.

I also want to know if there are any online courses (including fee paying) that is extremely highly recommendable from personal experience in any field.

Plus has anyone done an online degree, any recommended in the business area?

While the fact that I don't need to do anything urgently, doesn't put off the fact that when my mother passes away I will be in a situation where compared to others of my age I 'would' have been severely lacking behind. But I hope to do something, so when the time comes I could get the chance to work around the world instead of despairing.

Please and Thank You :D

Edit: I am from Asia, so take that in mind why I want to keep it solely online

In Australia we have Open Universities Australia www.open.edu.au - the degrees they give can be completely Open University courses or made up of subjects that are from several other reputable Australian Universities. I believe that other universities in Australia (for instance the Charles Stuart University and the one in New England) also offer degrees by distance education - these universities tend to be on the fringes of regional Australia.

However, the UK was the first of the Open Universities, and I am sure there are others in other countries. Since you are in Asia, Australia might be better from a time zone perspective.

MIT has some good stuff with their Open Courseware, I used it to refresh my basic calculus a few years back. There are also other things that are pretty nifty. If you want to learn a new language, check out Duolingo. I've been using it to practice my French, and have decided to go back to school to do a new degree (BA in French with a Spanish minor, most likely).

I work at a university, so I get a free class every semester which I intend to use to do that degree, and I am thinking of becoming a freelance translator once I FIRE for beer money. :)

My friend earned her teaching degree from Western Governor's University; they're actually accredited unlike most online-only schools.

That's a great point.  Make sure your online courses are accredited, otherwise you may be wasting money.  In Canada, Athabasca University is well known for its online, accredited, courses.

Thanks guys!

I hope others can add in more.

I am also looking into learning languages too, but a degree seems like a basic start first.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
