Republic wireless and international travel
« on: January 06, 2020, 07:52:55 AM »
Thinking of switching over to Republic Wireless.  For those who use it and have traveled internationally, any issues?  I understand you have to be on wi-fi to make/receive calls when abroad.  I'm female and travel solo internationally usually 2-3 times a year; sometimes my trips are ~2 weeks long across multiple countries.

I'm so used to having 24/7 access to make calls, etc. Getting lost is a concern, but I can download an offline map for that.  I also use data heavily when abroad for things from checking the time a location is open until, to looking up a place's phone number, to searching for grocery stores or restaurants "near me" to go to spontaneously, to even needing to open email to show I've purchased a train ticket somewhere.  Shows just how dependent I've been on my phone for some time now.

The savings RW offers has me intrigued so I'm seriously considering making the jump; I'm mostly concerned about being somewhere without wifi and actually needing to make a call (or access data for something important).  What has been your experiences with RW abroad?  Have you ever been in a scenario where you need to use your phone abroad and could not?  I'm especially interested in hearing from those who have traveled with RW solo since those traveling with spouses, SOs, friends/family/etc. usually have access to at least one other person's phone whereas on my solo trips I do not.

Hi!
My DH and I both have RW and have traveled abroad for 2 - 4 weeks a year for the past several years (on RW).  In general, we've found it to be fine in terms of connectivity but of course, it depends on where you're traveling to and the reliability of wifi access there and how comfortable you feel jumping onto public-ish-networks.  In hotels, hostels, friend's homes, etc. we tend to have enough connection, but sometimes public places are a little more spotty (though we aren't usually making calls in that scenario).  FWIW, we've used our RW phones to call/text/ surf on wifi in Greece, Spain, Thailand, Bali, New Zealand, London, etc. YMMV depending on the remoteness of your destinations.  Like you mentioned, we do usually download a google map (or pull up a destination before leaving an area w/ wifi) and that's worked fine. Google maps works surprisingly well even when it can't detect where you are in the map.

Full disclosure though - DH is currently exploring switching to Google Fi since he thinks we might save a tiny bit more and have more connectivity overseas (as well in the USA on a remote drive that we make frequently, based off the networks Google uses) than on RW... but since he's the one investigating, I can't say for sure. It's not been a big enough issue to have us switch fast or feel pressured to.  We've been generally happy with RW, though I know many others on the forums insist on even cheaper options.

Depends on where you're going, but I bought SIM cards for our phones in Ireland. Twenty euro gets you a month of unlimited data, local calls, and texts. We used WhatsApp and Facetime to stay in touch with people in the US.
