Recommendations for a computer monitor brand?
« on: July 06, 2014, 06:58:34 AM »
My nice big I-INC monitor seems to be dying, I get smears and afterimages on it.  It is over 4 years old and has seen a lot of use . . . I asked on the Do It Yourself Group and have had views but no suggestions, so I am assuming this can't be fixed.  Right now I am on my old (saved for emergencies) small Philips monitor, the quality is OK but the small screen size is not.

So, any recommendations on brand?  I need a big monitor with good resolution, so that I don't have to wear reading glasses, but other than that nothing special.  I don't do high-end graphic games, I don't care about the frame size, etc. I do care abut cost and reliability.

I can shop at Tigerdirect.ca, Staples, Best Buy, Future Shop, or my local computer store (tomorrow, closed Sundays), so access is not an issue.

I've had good experience with both ASUS and Samsung monitors.

The Dell Ultrasharp line is also quite good, though a bit spendier.

Monoprice has (sometimes/usually) the best off-brand quality monitors you can buy.

It really doesn't matter today who you buy from. They're all the same really. The bigger question is what size you want, between 20 and 30 inches. They're all reliable(enough). My last monitor was an HP 22 inch 1680x1050 that lasted me for 6 years, when the power button started getting sticky/bad.

Of my current 2 Acer 27" 1080p monitors, I have 2 stuck pixels on one monitor, and haven't and don't expect to have any other issues for a very long time.

Figure out if you want a matt or a reflective screen as these are not always specified for online sales.

I now have a Dell 25" with a very nice image but the first one I ordered came with a mirror like screen and I had to exchange it. The screen was not usable in my computer room because of window and overhead light location.
The exchange process was awful.

fun fact:

Nearly ALL of the panels/TV's are made by 2 manufacturers.  the rest of the electronics and frame are what is 'branded'.

Samsung is great.  a 24" samsung or Asus will cost a bit more than the low end, but the difference is amazing.

@ 5 or 6 years back, I bought a samsung 24" for about $429 at costco.  You can get a better one now for $200.  I'm determined to get this one to last another few years for my overspending!

I got a 39" 4k tv I'll be using as a monitor. It was 390 when I bought it; it's down to 300 now (massive price drop two weeks later - bleh, no price match, so sad.)

A bit unwieldy but you might like that solution.
