Really!?!
« on: May 17, 2016, 05:27:07 PM »
I was just on another retirement forum (sorry for the infidelity).  A guy was asking the community if he could retire.  He was 58, single, no kids.  He had 2mm+ in investments and cash, 38k cola'ed pension and 30k SS 62, and expenses were 50k per year or 75k for outlandish living...his words. WTF? In whose universe would there be any doubt that one could retire with these numbers?

I mean we could talk about it here which would make it even more arbitrary - or, ya know, you could just link us...

Fear can do weird things to a person.  Make them illogical and irrational.

Some people aren't great with numbers. Or need permission from others to do what they want.

Is it Bogleheads?  I always read posts like that on Bogleheads.

I'd imagine they're worried about major medical expenses, end-of-life care or costly medical breakthroughs that can extend life expectancy.

It might sound silly, but it depends on who you're comparing yourself to. Most of the people here look ridiculous if your reference is ERE.

It was Early-retirement.org.  I used to follow ER.org regularly befor I found MMM.  Good point on perspectives. ERE followers would consider my MMM lifestyle over the top.  I must admit that I often check others' thoughts on ER situations to bolster my own confidence.  I always come back here where the advice and discussions make the most sense to me.  Again, forgive my infidelity.  I'll never look at another early retirement forum again. I promise.  I love you, MMM.

Agreed. It's likely much more the case where he wants the social acceptance of retiring. That may create a blindspot when it comes to rationally evaluating the numbers.
