Quotes that motivate us to save
« on: April 08, 2016, 01:54:01 PM »
When we were working hard to pay off our house, I cut a quote out of a magazine and put it in the clear part of my wallet (the place where most people would put a driver's license). It said:

"A bargain isn't a bargain unless it's something you need."

I found this quote to be quite motivating, and it prevented me from making a few would-be-stupid purchases.

What's a quote you'd like to share?

What would it cost to buy that every week?

Thanks to the hedonic treadmill, once you start buying things, you ignore having them and need something better.  So I evaluate new expenses as lifetime upgrades.  I don't usually buy fast food, and this idea stops me.  In this case I'm not worried about the $3 mediocre burger, but the calories and nutrition and habit.  I pass by umpteen fast food places on my walks around town, and the reason I don't eat there is because they don't register as food.  Food comes from the grocery store or my kitchen or rarely the garden.

“The philosopher Diogenes was eating bread and lentils for supper. He was seen by the philosopher Aristippus, who lived comfortably by flattering the king. Said Aristippus, 'If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.' Said Diogenes, 'Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king".”

Love ^^^ - great quote!

1. I have a yellow sticky app on my phone that says LASER FOCUS - I see it everyday and sometimes I add my next goal right below - like Car -12K with the image of a little red car.

2. Right now my motto is - "I am re-directing my money". It reminds me that I am in charge of my money and that I have chosen to use my money to fund my goals instead of squandering it away on crap.
That also works to keep me from gleefully buying jewelry online - I can't right now, because I am re-directing my money. It also tells me there will be a time when I will allow spending again - so it is temporary - and that word "temporary" always makes me feel instantly better and makes saving so much more palatable to me. I can do "temporary:)" - can't you?

I'm telling you - you natural savers have no clue the tricks a natural spender has to employ to stay on target.

"Every dollar can be spent on things or on time".

Not a direct quote, but it makes it easy for me to not want things.   When I stare at the price of something, it's literally to the point where I more frequently think about the price in terms of extra minutes/hours of work, rather than the dollars/cents.

Money is only important when you don't have any.

(So I try to organize my life so that money doesn't become important.)

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”  - Mark Twain

That's more of a task-management quote, but can be useful for financial matters.  This stuff seems easy for many of us, but it's not for a lot of others.

Quote I came up with a few years ago after a big (continued) shift in life was:
Work Hard Now to Stress Less Later - WHNtSLL.
I scribble the acronym down on notes here and there.

That whole movie.

And whatever they say in meetings at my job. I'm constantly running retirement numbers in my head during them. "gotta get out of here"

I ran across this line in an obscure Ginger Rogers movie, Having Wonderful Time: It's an awfully silly world. People work 50 weeks a year so they can spend two weeks looking at the moon.

Something that I remind myself of not only with saving but building any new habit...

'Some people look at money and see stuff they can buy. Others look at it and see freedom. The freedom to face an emergency without worrying if it'll break the bank. The freedom to travel. The freedom to retire. Money is freedom.' -Dad.

"You can, and you will"

When I'm having a hard time keeping myself going, or I'm scared to start, or I feel like something is beyond me- then I go to this as a mantra.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
