Post by: starguru on December 19, 2014, 05:45:23 PM
Has anyone tried this software?  Worth the $75 when compared with something like personal capital?

I've been debating switching too.  I'm using Moneydance which is mediocre, at best.

I found this review http://investorjunkie.com/36959/quicken-2015-mac-review/ (http://investorjunkie.com/36959/quicken-2015-mac-review/) and it seems that, for the price, Quicken for Mac 2015 is not worth it.

The Mac version is a crippled version (IMHO) of the PC version.  I'd used Quicken for Windows for 15 years before I got a Mac, but one look at the Mac version of Quicken and I installed an emulator to run my old Windows OS on my new Mac.  This was 5 years ago, but I'm still running Quicken on Win7 on my Mac (but there have been upgrade charges for Parallels and Quicken in the meantime).

At least at the time, Quicken for Mac had no ability to enter ESPP or stock options, so it wasn't useful to me (maybe they've been added since?)

If you still want to try the Mac version, get it on Amazon or somewhere else for $50, not Intuit's $75.

I've read that Quicken for Mac is basically worthless there are tons of bugs.  I read better reviews on MoneyDance and was considering trying it.  What do you like/dislike about it?  I've only used Quicken for PC,  but am getting a Mac and need a new solution.

You can keep using Quicken for PC - just get VMWare or Parallels and port your Windows machine to the Mac.

I used Quicken (for PC) for over a decade and switched over to Mac version 1 year ago.  My version is called Quicken Essentials for mac.  It's a completely different product, and from what I've read, is meant to be more similar to Mint.com than to Quicken for windows.
There are some major limitations in the mac version, such as the inability to create custom reports and the inability to track transactions in investment accounts.  But I made a decision last year when I realized I had much too much data, and too little analysis to truly understand my financial situation.  So I use Quicken Essentials for Mac and for the parts not covered adequately in Quicken, I have a very simple spreadsheet that tracks other things that I like to look at over time.  It actually helps me have a deeper understanding of my finances when I  do some of the tracking manually.

If you get it, there is some pain involved in transferring your old files.  plan on keeping a parallel system until you decide whether you can live with a greatly limited version or not.

Intuit had a pretty full-featured version of Quicken for Mac in 2007, but it was apparently an old code base that they weren't willing to maintain and update anymore, so they wrote Quicken Essentials from scratch and released it a few years ago. Most Quicken users hated it because it couldn't track investment accounts or many of the other important things, so they wrote a new version. I tried the beta test version and it seemed like it would do pretty much everything I would want, but I'm still pretty happy with the 2007 version so I didn't spring for the upgrade.
