Purchase with Gift Card or Cash?
« on: May 22, 2016, 07:40:09 AM »
I'd like to purchase something for my kids. I could buy it on Amazon for $14.99, or use a Toys 'r' Us gift card that's been sitting around the house for a couple of years to purchase it at that store for $19.99. Which would you do?

Unless you plan on regifting the gift card I'd use it.

Sell gift card on raise.com if you can get more than $15 for it. Otherwise use the gift card.

Unless you expect to need something else in the near future that ToysRUs sells for less than Amazon (or at least better than 33% more than Amazon), use the gift card now. No reason to keep that gift card sitting around forever while you spend actual money on stuff that the gift card could have bought.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I used the gift card. (I know you've all been on the edge of your seats wondering what happened).

One other reason I tend to use gift cards first is that retailers can go out of business.  If you have a gift card sitting in your wallet for several years by the time you end up using it the store might be out of business (ex. Borders, Sports Authority).
