PSA - State-by-State Unclaimed Property Sites
« on: February 11, 2025, 11:50:41 AM »
Just a quick heads up, because not a lot of people I mention it to know about them (but perhaps this crowd might be more likely to):

Each state runs their own website for unclaimed property ($$). You should search your name in each state you've lived in to make sure you don't have any unclaimed money!
Just do a google search for ">State< unclaimed property", put in your name, and see what pops up.
Most of these are .gov websites, otherwise I could see how this all looks like a scam, but it's not. It's typically overpayments, rebates, lawsuit claims, etc that for whatever reason never made their way to you so the states hold on to them.

Every so often I remember these sites exist and go around telling everyone I know to search for themselves, this round has seen several of my coworkers collecting amounts ranging from $20 - $1200.

Hope this yields something for you :)

Actually, I was going to post a reminder about this today.  Missingmoney.com handles this for the states in one spot.  Often the state site links will take you to missingmoney.  It is absolutely legit.  My friend got $11,000 over the summer and another friend just submitted info for $260 today.  Some states will have an amount and some don't.  Some say under $25 or over $50 or whatever.  But I think all they states are listed there and it's easier than going to each state site where you've ever lived.

Oh wow this is super handy that you can search everywhere or narrow it down state by state. Thanks for the heads up!

Search for your parents....I found one for my dad for like $800.  That is worth filling out a form for...what's crazy is they actually had his current address so no idea why it came to this.

Definitely worth checking for people close to you! Last year I found my DH had a bit from a closed bank account, and my sister had something from an apartment she lived in years ago. It's a bit of a pain to claim, but definitely worth it.

I checked last year, and Alabama had $100 of ours (now we live in TN).  I followed the process through, and now the record of unclaimed property in Alabama in my name shows clear, but I never saw my $100.

And now that there is no listed unclaimed property in Alabama, I have no record of unclaimed property to refer  to.  So, I guess that means that I will just have to hope one day my $100 check shows up.  :(

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
