Title: President's Carter speech in minimalist documentary

I was watching the minimalist documentary the other day (https://minimalismfilm.com/). There is a
clip where they play parts of a speech from President's Carter
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO0QdnUbkr8). He warns Americans about the dangers
of mindless consumerism. I wasn't aware of that speech. I totally agree with what he said,
but it made me wonder what made him decide to incorporate that topic into the speech. Do you know
of any article or material that talks a bit more about it?

The doc was interesting, if a bit righteous and simplistic.

I don't like hugs from strangers, generally.

I watched that speech live. Part of the inspiration was the oil shortage if I recall correctly.

I believe this is from his Crisis of Confidence speech. At first millions of Americans loved the speech. It got a great approval initially, but over the weeks, many felt that it made him look week because he "squared" with the American people. He never recovered and one of the reasons he lost the 1980 election. Love me some Jimmy Carter. I often show this speech in some of my classes.
