Pay thru Gasbuddy, 5c/gal discount, anyone?
« on: February 22, 2018, 01:03:24 PM »
Gasbuddy (a website & phone app to find the lowest gas prices near you) is offering a 5c/gal discount if you pay through them.  Hook up your checking account and pay with your debit card as usual, and the discount is figured in.  15c/gal for the first fill-up.  Is anyone doing this?  Would you?

Gas in my area is about $2.40/gal right now.  Works out to about 2.1% back.  2.1% back for needing to use a debit card at a gas station.  Hell no.  I'll take more cashback and better fraud protection with my credit card, please.  Bonus if the gas station can do contactless.

But if you're paying through gas buddy, are you actually taking the risk associated with using a debit card at the pump?

Either way I agree that my 3% cash back on gas is better. Even if I had no cash back on gas it would only work out to about $6 annually to run through a third party so, not for me. Maybe if you can work out getting cash back on spend plus gas buddy discount?

A credit card is better protection and there are several that offer 3% rewards at gas stations, worth considering, since every dollar counts and gas for most of us is a necessity:)

Costco Visa has 4% back on gas year round.  That's nearly 10c off per gallon at today's prices.  There is a membership fee of course, so really only valid if you shop at Costco already, or you buy a LOT of gas.

Sam's Club Mastercard, or is it Visa, I can't remember.  Anyways, it gives you 5% back at gas stations and even if you cancel your membership you continue to get the 5% at gas stations and 3% at restaurants 1% everywhere else.  The only hassle is they send you a check once a year that can only be cashed at Sam's Club.

If you also buy the gas at Costco, you also get another 10 cent discount off convenience store prices.  Combined with the rebate on the Costco card, it's a sweet deal.

I use gasbuddy to check the the lowest price gas in town, but this 5 cents per gallon deal is not a good deal. As already mentioned on this thread, I use my costco citi visa and get 4% back (over 12 cents per gallon with gas over $3 here). Actually, this quarter Chase is paying 5% back on gas. Almost any credit card gives you a better deal than 5 cents.
But gasbuddy is the bomb for find the cheapest gas both local and travelling. I sure appreciate all those who enter and update prices!

Yup, credit cards do have better deals.  I was more interested in how everyone feels about using their debit card, hooking their bank account to a third party app, and giving their gas-buying data to that app too.

Costco has the cheapest gas here, or within a penny or two of it.  I buy most of my groceries there as well.  I haven't gotten their card yet but it's a no-brainer.

I don't use a debit card for anything unless I'm pulling cash out of an ATM.  Nothing else, ever.
