Part-Time Info for those Interested
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:19:22 AM »
Hello All!

I know several of you are interested in Part Time work, either to bridge the gap between expenses and passive income or just because you like your work and don't want to stop entirely.  (In my situation it is a little of both.)  I had a part-time job interview last week and I figured I would share info for those who are curious.

First of all, I got the interview by calling up several ex-colleagues and ex-managers and telling them I was interested in exploring the idea of switching from full-time to part time work - 24h or 3 days a week.  4 out of 8 said, definitely, me your updated resume, and 1 was actively hiring and scheduled an interview with the HR department.  The company is a global high-tech manufacturer with about 8000 employees.

I was told that I had 2 options for Part-Time.  Option 1 was to work as an employee, at a pro-rated salary.  Medical benefits, 401K etc. were all available, but just at the pro-rated rate.  So I would pay a bit more for medical, and get the same % matching (6% of salary, max).

Since I work in IT, there is often weekend work, or support needed off-hours and so I asked about what happened to pay in situations where I had to work >24 hours.  They said in that case I would just adjust my timecard and the payroll department would pay the extra, up to 40 hours.  Above and beyond 40 hours would not be paid, as my type of work (IT Project Management) is generally salaried.

The second option was to come in as a contractor, thru an agency, and then the benefits, etc. would be supplied through the agency, at whatever rate I could negotiate.

I was told that not many employees take advantage of the policy, and the ones that do are usually parents of young children.

I can't leave my present job until spring because that's when bonuses are paid, and also when I will be finishing up some big projects, so Im not sure they will hold the job that long, but it was great to hear that the option is out there.
