Our clown car--or NOT!
« on: March 25, 2018, 09:24:30 AM »
We bought a 1996 lexus in 2007. My wife kept an eye on cars that our customers drive,
and kept telling them if you get ready to trade that car in let me know, I might buy it.
Finally one of the customers said the dealer was giving him $4,000 for the Lexus as a trade in.
I think that was a good price for such a car, so we bought it.
We put just over 50,000 miles on it in 11 years between us and our son, that took it to college
when he a left few years ago.
We just sold the car for $2,900. My wife pointed out, that was $100 a year to own the car!
 Clown car, I think NOT!
Just wanted to post a car purchase and sale that was Mustachian.  :-)
Kudos to the wife, for her persistance.

We've kept our cars reasonable but nothing close to $100/year depreciation!

Kudos indeed!

Well done, funny because I am currently looking for a ~5-15 year old Lexus because of the good value and high initial depreciation. A lot of very nice cars available for <10k that were bought for 30k+

A few years ago I bought an original-owner Swedish purchased (still has the Sweden license plate) 2009 Volvo V70 wagon for $11K. While not the most Mustachian car ever, I do take good care of of it and it was in excellent shape when I got it. No major repairs have been needed so far. I just checked the KBB and it says the value is about $9K.

Not bad but you have done great, @BTDretire! My aunt has mid - 90s Lexus RX something and it's a great car. I think people are wary of used luxury types of vehicles but they have usually had great maintenance by their previous owners.

We've gone this route with an Acura. Initial depreciation was ridiculous and absorbed by the first owner. We'll keep it for another 200K+ comfortable miles like our other Honda products.

Its been a nice change from the noisy, buzzy cars we've taken on long trips in the past. This recent effort by some automakers to reduce interior noise levels I completely support.
