Online sites for long term international rentals?
« on: June 14, 2015, 05:46:29 PM »
My wife and I are interested in some international travel to places like Belize or Thailand where one can stay for a month inexpensively compared to typical tourist hot spots. I'm new to the concept and I'm having difficulty locating relevant information online for this, thought this could be because I really don't know what I'm looking for. Does this vary widely by country? Is there not really any great sites for this kind of info? I thought surely I'd find some kind of travel forum where people share places and experiences where one could travel to for $1,000 to $1,500 a month. Has anyone here done this or have some knowledge on this topic?

It varies a lot from country to country. Often you'll find the best deals once in a town.  AirBnB can be a start for finding longer-term rentals while onsite, or you can negotiate a longer-term rental with an Air BnB host. People have stayed for a month or two at a time while working on creative projects.

My mother is currently traveling throughout Europe and will be gone for a year before she returns. We booked all of her stays for at least one month, to get the best rates possible, and have used Airbnb and Homeaway for all bookings. We are careful to thoroughly research each place and ensure many positive reviews before paying a deposit. She's 5 months into the trip and has been very pleased with each place she's stayed so far.

AirBnB.  You can rent by the day, week, month, or longer.  You can negotiate lower rates for longer stays.  By far the best way to go.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

We negotiated with our air bnb host for a long term rental. Somewhere like Thailand it's easy to find somewhere once you get there.

As previously mentioned, www.airbnb.com  is good.  Also www.vrbo.com and www.homeaway.com are good.  They also have monthly rentals on www.tripadvisor.com

If you're OK with pets, you could also try to do house sitting and then you would get to stay for free. Sites like trustedhousesitters.com, nomador.com, mindmyhouse.com match up people who want someone to watch their pets while they're on vacation with people who are willing to do that, in exchange for free rent. I think this would mainly be in more developed countries but as it's free, it could be worth looking into.

I noticed vrbo.com and homeaway.com in my initial googling but most of the rentals all seemed to cater to spend big money. Multiple-four figures for a big house right on the water type stuff. Could have just been a down cycle at the moment. I'll keep looking around.

I lived in France for almost 5 months in 2013.  We negotiated with the the host on AirBnB for a long(er) term rental.  He wanted us to wire one month's rent as a deposit prior to arrival, but he'd worked with other people in the program before (graduate study abroad) and they told us he was legit so we didn't have any qualms about it.  Worked out for both of us.

Where did you live in France if you don't mind me asking? My husband & I are considering moving to France when we are FI (maybe for about a year) We were in France in 2013 too, but only for about two weeks. We were thinking about enrolling in an intense language program while we are there.

I lived in Aix-en-Provence, about a 30 minute bus ride outside of Marseille.  I loved it, I miss it all the time! Can't wait to go back.

Awesome! We were in Camargue, about a 30 - 40 minute car ride to the West of Marseille & in Tourrettes which is about 1 hour West of Cannes. It was great! Thanks for sharing. I hope you get back there.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
