Online Federal Tax Calculator for 2018
« on: August 05, 2018, 07:51:55 AM »
I know the IRS has published "draft" versions of their 2018 1040....but was trying to find a nice online calculator to estimate my 2018 federal taxes, since the rules have changed so much since the last year.

I just wanted to share this calculator that I stumbled upon this morning with the MMM crowd: https://www.mortgagecalculator.org/calcs/1040-calculator.php

It seems pretty comprehensive, and I think it handles almost everything that will be applicable to my tax filing.

I hope this helps some folks.  (Disclaimer: I have absolutely no relationship with that site... I just found the calculator today and found it useful, and I thought others here would be interested.  If this post seems spammy, then mods, feel free to remove.)

Thanks!  I imagine most state calculators will work the same as pre-reform, right? I'm in NYS and NYC, so that's obviously an even more significant tax burden now.

Nice looking, and good if one fits within its parameters.  Of course, that applies to any such less-than-complete program. ;)

That one is missing the saver's credit and gets the wrong number for refundable child tax credit.

If one doesn't mind spreadsheets, there is the case study spreadsheet hosted here that seems applicable to most.

Since recent federal tax reform has passed, I have been estimating using following calendar side. I like it

That one also ignores saver's and earned income credits on the low end, and Net Investment Income Tax, etc. on the high end.  But it may be correct in between.

TurboTax's taxcaster claims that it has been updated for 2018 with the new tax code, but when I started walking through it, it appeared to be doing 2017 taxes.  I stopped at that point, but maybe it would do 2018 also if you went all the way through it?

Is it just me or do the first two links not have a spot for 401k or pre tax insurance contributions?  I'm assuming I'm just missing it though.

I didn't find them either.  I ended up just taking it off my taxable income manually.

I think this may be what you're looking for:

https://apps.irs.gov/app/withholdingcalculator/

They released this after the new tax law to help people calculate proper withholdings, which may be your true objective. Even if it isn't, it will give you an estimate for your total I believe.

Does that one have a spot for capital gains?  I didn't see it.

I have been claiming married and 2 all year even though I’m married with no kids. Is there any sort of calculator to figure out how bad I’ll screwed come tax time?

That being said, I switched jobs after nearly maxing out SS through one employer this year, and will nearly max it out again through the 2nd, all of which I assume I should get back

The good news is, by claiming 2 and all the tax free money I get from my employer, my take home manages to be more than my taxable gross most paychecks lol.

Edit* - tried one of those calculators. Looks to only make about a $4500 difference. My SS should easily offset that and then some. Great.

If you want to use online calculators only, take particular care to ensure that what they don't cover doesn't affect you.  There are many relatively common situations they do not address.

The most accurate predictors in general are likely the "what if?" worksheets of TurboTax, TaxAct, etc., with two spreadsheets (the case study spreadsheet and 2018 Federal Income Tax Estimator) not far behind for most.

Thanks for the link!! Tried it out and was relieved to see its projecting what I thought it would since 2018 is quite different for me than in 2017
