Ok - I give up - what does $XXX MM mean?

I've been on this forum for a while now and love it.

But - have seen many quoting dollar amounts here and often putting 'MM' after it.  Money mustaches?

Who will put me out of my misery and explain?

MM = million.  It comes from the Latin "mille," which means thousand.  Two Ms crammed together = thousand X thousand = one million.

In the metric system M = 1 million. So $1M really does mean 1 million, for most of the world ;) 
$1k is $1,000 using the metric abbreviation.

For some people MM does mean 1 million, its a confusing term (think of MMBTU, MMBbl). I'm pretty sure it came about because you couldn't type the proper key in with a typewriter (an M with a bar above is the roman symbol for a million). Once upon a time they had to make do typing with only the 26 letters (pre-internet, it was a ghastly time). Its probably an accepted custom because of how typewriters worked. It doesn't make it wrong, it's just an historical anomaly that is now a custom.

so MM=M=one million and the correct term is dependent on context.

At one time, "M" was the most common abbreviation for thousand in the banking world (from Latin). Thus, a different abbreviation ("MM") was needed for million. Around here people typically use "k" for thousand and "M" for million, but someone who wants to be absolutely clear that they mean million instead of thousand can use MM.

I still use MM daily.  When you trade on certain trading system (bloomber etc).  M = 000, MM=000,000

Yep, coming from the sciences, I use "K" for thousands (kilo-). But in my MBA I was told that "M" meant thousands and "MM" meant millions.

I guess "MMM" means billions!!

In my world (banking), M = thousand and MM = million.   But, I still tend to write it out to avoid the possibility of confusion.   

Sadly, my current 'stache is best measured in M and not MM.

In my world (also banking) we write $'000 for thousand and $M for million.

We're not quite big enough to have to round numbers to the nearest billion but when it happens I believe the convention will be $bn.

Funny how it is all different.
