Nurses/Docs - Men's Scrubs Recommendations?
« on: July 30, 2016, 09:03:57 AM »
Hey Mustachians!

I'm in a direct-entry NP program and will start clinicals in the fall. Any recommendations for good value scrubs for men? Any features I should consider? Should I try them on in a store for fit or are there any good websites I should be sure to check out? (I'm required for them to be maroon in color).

Thanks so much!

EDIT: I guess it should be noted I'm not excited about the required color (which seems to be referred to as "Wine" by most manufacturers). Since I expect to work in family practice, I might not wear scrubs at all two years from now. Even more likely, I'll be eager then to go out and get colors I actually want to be seen in. So I think my definition of value leans more towards being able to afford several pairs so I have to run fewer washes than have something that will be extremely long-lasting.

Not a man, but I recently ordered some WonderWink scrubs from Amazon that I'm really happy with. The fabric feels sturdy so I think they'll hold up well (only on the 4th or 5th wash now, so too soon to say) and the price was reasonable (~$30 for the set). If you're looking specifically for low cost, allheart.com usually has very cheap scrubs... in my experience, though, they look and feel cheap.

There's a world of difference between the stiff cotton "walmart style" scrubs and the higher tech fabrics that you get at Scrub Vault, Life Uniform, etc. If you really want to go cheap, I would buy a pair of the cheapo walmart ones (like $8 a piece, so $16 for the set last I checked) and see if you'll be able to tolerate them. Wash them then spend a day out in them- go run some errands, sit in a coffee shop, walk around, etc. It'll give you a good feel for them. If they do work, cool, you can buy cheap stuff. If, like most nurses, you HATE the feeling of them and the lack of special pockets (pen pockets are WONDERFUL, as are the side "cargo" pockets in the pants), then you'll want the higher quality ones. Sign up for a mailing list at somewhere like here: http://www.scrubsandbeyond.com/ You can go in store to a Life Uniform or somewhere like that and try them on. Then, you'll know your brands/fabrics/sizes you like, and can order online through there with coupons. I've had some luck with in-store sales and a couple on Amazon, but as a woman I have more variety to choose from =\

I got through nursing school with only 2 pairs of scrubs. Even when working 3 or 4 12s in a row during my senior practicum. This wouldn't work if you don't have in-unit laundry, but I found that as long as you have a regimented laundry schedule you can get by just fine. We did navy though, and I still use the "better" pair of pants (grey's anatomy drawstring), and use the "worse" pair of pants (a pair of elastic wonder wink that never fit right on the waist) as my back up, in-case-I-get-pooped-on pants (I always have these in my car, haha).

Anyway, hope some of that was useful!

I like the Landau Brand, good combination of moderate price and durability/comfort.  I would suggest to not invest a bunch of money into scrubs (buy one set initially) until after you have been on your clinical sites for awhile.  Time on the job will give you a feel for the functionality you will need (ie how many pockets, waist tie, etc).  I have found I cannot ever have too many pockets and alway end up with cargo pants and tops with pockets as well.  Zipper fly is a plus for a quick bathroom break on the go :) function & comfort over form on scrubs!

P.S. if you are buying online, which I do because retail stores are more tailored to women and have less options for men, realize the sizing charts suck.  You will likely have to return your first purchase of any brand to size up or down, so plan accordingly timewise.

Cherokees are sturdy and mine have lasted for 5+ years with no issues. Most styles have a cargo pocket, which I love.

I second the recommendation to try them on in the store and then look online for the best price, though sometimes the stores are comparable.

If you have the money, it's a HUGE improvement in quality of life to get enough pairs to only have to do laundry once a week. If you have a stay-at-home SO who can help out, that's another story. While you're in school there's so much stress and so many other demands on your time, you want to make things as simple as possible.

Do you have good shoes too? Make sure they're something that can be wiped down if you're doing any rotations in pediatrics or the ED.

Not a nurse/doc, but our Goodwill has two entire racks devoted to scrubs.  Some even have the tags still on.  So, whatever you decide, check there first.  Go to the Goodwill on the "nice" side of town and you will be amazed at what you find.

I always liked Dickies.

A big thing to me was having the front pockets in the shirts. Soooo convenient.

Thanks for the input by everyone so far!

I keep hearing that I will never have enough pockets. I agree with two comments above: I plan to buy only one (maybe two) pairs of scrubs initially to figure out during clinicals what I like / will need. But I also agree that my time/stress/peace of mind, is one of the few things worth spending money on, so I do plan to buy more sets once I know what I like.

I'm actually taking a chance on www.wearfigs.com. One of these newer online-only retailers - (they're a B Corp too, which I like). Admittedly, the main reason I chose them is that their color best matched my uniform requirements without being a dreary "wine." Also, they have an unconditional 30 day return policy.

As for shoes, I have a pair of dark grey Nike Free's that I think I can get away with initially, but spill/stains are not going to be kind to them. I'll hold off on shoes for now, so long as the preceptors are fine with them. I keep hearing about one brand that all nurses say I "must have" but I can't remember them at the moment.

Since I'll have clinicals at least 2x/week most weeks, I'll probably also pick up a more tried and true (Landau/Dickies/Cherokee/etc.) brand as well.

Thanks again everyone.

Ugh. Everyone loves dansko clogs. I think they are butt ugly and a good way to twist an ankle. Honestly, I've always done tennis shoes. Mesh ones wash perfectly well. Just keep a spare pair in your locker/car in case of mess. On the other hand, I'm not in OB, where I would probably go with a 100% NOT breathable option. Lol.

I have Danskos and am on my second pair. The first lasted 7 yrs and the second is 6 yrs in and going strong. They are ugly, but they come in more colors and patterns now, though more women wear them than men. It's best to try them on in Nordstorm's or a medical store and then try to find a pair on eBay.

After 2 hours of wear, tennis shoes are slightly more comfortable than Danskos; but after 12 hours on your feet, Danskos are the clear winner.

This might not work for everyone, but there are really easy DIY videos on Youtube.

My brother does pediatric dentistry and has a large, broad-shouldered build. He can never find fun scrubs in his sizes. Cartoon ones seem to come in only female versions. So for Christmas I made him a few Star Wars sets, and Vikings prints, with all the pockets his heart could desire.
