Hi folks, I'm thinking about getting an infra red sauna.

I love the sauna and I'm confident that I'd use it enough to justify getting one and taking up space with it. Plus almost 40 years in construction and some aches and pains.

First thought about this when a guy offered me one for free. He said he does demolition and a big body builder guy gave it to him.

But one of the heater panels and music speakers is burned out. Plus of course you sweat a lot in them and couldn't really get to see the condition it was in as was disassembled in a corner.

So I went looking online and at Costco in Canada they have one for $1300 plus about 150 in taxes , so 1450 ish...   I still have a gym membership that I've been hanging onto as I like the sauna, gym I have set up at home.    My gym use time has gone up , way up since I set up a home gym and I figure sauna use will too. So get rid of the gym membership that costs me around $48 a month.

What to do here?   If its an easy fix for a couple of hundred bucks and clean it up then its a deal, but if its a pile of junk and you waste your time trying to fix it up and it stinks, then its a waste of time.

Also went researching and one thing to watch for is the EMF  which I think is the strength of the electrical magnetic field, new ones are low in this and apparently some of the older ones weren't.

One last thing is that the guy has it in his garage where he also has his own home gym, just wondering why you'd give it away if it was pretty decent.

A true badass would just use a hollowed out tree stump with a camp fire to boil water.

Though, for us mortals, I would just buy the costco one and be done with it, if it is something you TRULY use all the time and will last a good number of years.

If you're good at DIY, the fixer upper is probably fine, but it seems to me that a sauna is like underwear. I wouldn't really want to use any of them other than mine.

Hey thanks for the conversation!

Yes I feel similar to that about using sauna, but in reality I do go to the one at the gym and its not without its weird moments like poo on the towel from the bench and people shaving in there.

I've been a regular user of the gym sauna for years and while I could see it being a bit like getting a massage, where you think it would be great to have them everyday and it turns out not really... I know for sure I'd use it frequently.

I think I'll go for it. I know muscles and joints will thank me.

I am good at DIY and I could probably fix it, but realistically I can earn good money having people pay me to fix stuff and I get tired of fixing stuff for ever, and as you say its a bit like underwear.

Were you thinking this community would shun you if you bought anything other than bread, lentils, and a bike?

I'm looking at infrared portable saunas, and want to buy one for myself. Unfortunately I can't afford those really nice wood saunas. I've heard some good things about the cheap portable ones on amazon. Do they actually work? I'm looking to spend around $400 or less. Any recommendations? Thanks
