New Job offer.
« on: July 11, 2016, 02:14:56 PM »
I am a telecommuter but was offered a higher position for 7k more and 10% bonus but I have to go in the office.  Right now I have 4% bonus.  Should I take the new job? The new office is 4 miles from my house.

What do you think? It's your life. Compare the short-term decrease in happiness you get from needing to make a four-mile commute versus the increase in happiness you might get from being FI a bit sooner.

You haven't given enough information for anyone to give an informed opinion.

What is your quality of life like now? How would it change? What additional commuting expenses would you have? How far are you from FI? What are your goals? How much faster would this help you to RE? How is your work/life balance now, how do you expect it to change? Are there other additional expenses you would have besides commuting (work clothes, child care, less time to cook etc)?

That is difficult to answer without any context.  It depends what makes you happy.

I would take the job because I like to be with people, so telecommuting would drive me nuts long term.  Four miles, you can walk or bike, so that makes it easy, and the pay is higher as is the bonus, so tough to argue with that.

Depends on what percent increase that represents.  Do you only make, say, $10K now?  Nice bump if so.  If you make $125K it wouldn't be as appealing.

In my world, I wouldn't personally take it.  On the recent thread asking how much of a pay cut we would take to telecommute I said I would give up 50% of what I make now.  The office sucks due to all of its officy-officiousness.  The political goobers there cause me great sickness.

If I assume you have a salary of say $60k, then the offer is $7k and 4%, so approaching $10k gross, maybe $500 a month net extra after tax when you already have say $3500. On that basis, no, I would NOT take it, I think there are a range of issues working in an office (politics, noise, getting interrupted/productivity, inconvenience, personal space, restricted daily routine, more politics, lost commuting time) and I would not consider $500 a month sufficient to accept them.

Tell them 10K and you'll do it. That 10K in tax-advantaged accounts, plus interest, could accelerate your FIRE date considerably.

Another thing to consider is that 4 miles is such a short commute that it will likely not allow your car to fully warm up if you live in a northern climate. I ended up losing my exhaust system flex pipe due to condensation from a 6 mile each way commute.

Short commutes are for bikes.

I get severe headaches from riding bikes if it's not very warm. Meniere's disease runs in the family, not everyone can ride bikes to work.

If it's just for the money, I wouldn't do it. If the new job can build your resume and get a higher paying job and get you to FIRE quicker then I would consider.

Remember that you are going to be using after tax money for your commuting expenses.
