New Health Insurance plan and HSA questions
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:58:09 AM »
I need to get health insurance in the next few days.  I've been trying to look for the absolute cheapest possible plan and team it up with opening an HSA.  I have a few questions:

- Does every high deductible plan allow me to open an HSA?  I'm looking at plans with $6,250 deductible and an out of pocket max of the same.

- Where do Mustachians like to open their HSA?  I'd probably stay in cash at first but would like to invest as my balance approaches and exceeds my out of pocket max.

- I expect to get married in 12-18 months and my future spouse's employer's plan will automatically cover me at no charge at that point.  Will I be able to keep my HSA and use it in the future even though I know I couldn't contribute to it further at that time?

Thank you anyone for your insight!

if it's marketed as a "high-deductible health plan," it should qualify for an HSA. Call them up and ask just to be on the safe side.

Yes, you can use your HSA funds even after you no longer have coverage through an HDHP. You can even use these funds for your spouse's medical expenses.

I should caveat this by saying I haven't started investing my HSA money yet, but from what I've seen most folks tend to go with one of HSA Bank, HSA Administrators, or ELFCU for HSAs with good investment options.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
