Net Worth Comparison by Age Group
« on: May 20, 2015, 07:05:48 AM »
I shared this in another thread, but figured it merited its own.  This is Scott Burns' "Wealth Scoreboard," derived from Survey of Consumer Finances conducted every 3 years. You can see how your household compares to others by age group:

I'm always surprised with how low these numbers are whenever I see data like this.  Median net worth for age 40-49 is only $68k.

Truth be told, net worth (or any other financial) comparisons have never meant much to me.  Why compare myself to other people, particularly since most probably they are not operating from my own financial mindset?  I've always just compared my current position to the position I have targeted as a goal.  That's all that really matters to me.

The number is really low at 30-39 where I easily make the 10% and even make the 5%. One year from now even with good savings and stock market returns I will be barely into the 10% and maybe not even there is the stock market corrects.
What are all those 50+ years old doing with the money? Building gold coins swimming pools and keeping it all to swim in?

I think pensions really throw the numbers, for the 40 or 50+ age groups. Probably most 30 year olds don't have a pension.

From a quick skim I think home equity is included.

We're somewhere between 10-25% depending on whose age you use between H and I. And that is our combined net worth, so maybe I'm supposed to divide by 2?

I'm somewhere between 10-25% if I take financial assests - mortgage (Edit: but did not include home equity, with home equity we are easily in top 10%, maybe top 5%).  I didn't look at the value of any of the stuff I own (or our cars).  I didn't include projected SS income.

I'm having trouble buying the accuracy of those numbers.
