Need job "reassignment" advice...
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:15:26 AM »
So they recently announced another "restructure" which will result in my current position being eliminated and replaced with another comparable position with the same location, pay, and benefits.  When this has happened in the past, we have been asked to sign an acceptance letter  for the new position.  Giving that I am planning on pulling the plug in April, I am very curious as to what would happen if I do not accept the new position. Any chance they would offer me a package?

My April 1st date is set in order to receive my bonus at the end of Feb (considered "earned" on Jan 1) and give the requested 30 day notice for someone in my position. I have planned to do everything by the book as possible as to not burn any bridges in the event I would ever need a job again, but the way things turn over around here, it is not likely there will be anyone who even remembers me after 3-4 years.  A big part of me does not even want to ask as it may raise a flag. Also, I indicated (very professionally) that I would leave around 2 years ago unless they promoted me (they did) and wouldn't want anyone to think I was trying that move again as it may result in animosity.  They've also played some games with bonuses in the past and I would not want to lose out there, either.

Should I ask?

You are close enough that I might just hang around, sign the letter,  keep quiet, and know that its only five months before I can ride off into the sunset.

Seconded. Just stick it out until April, better safe than sorry.

If it were me, I think I'd ask if they plan on any layoffs or offering any voluntary separation packages. If there is indication of VSP, I'd then volunteer for it. Sometimes management is happy to not have to layoff people due to having someone wanting to leave. It's a win win situation.

^Yes, it doesn't hurt to ask if they are looking for voluntary separation and have packages.

I agree that it's a douchebag move when companies require employees to sign new random conditions to remain employed, but they seem to do it regularly. But I think that just flat out refusing to sign it might just get you involuntarily separated without a bonus payout (at least in my "at will" employment state.) Just sign it. Keep that a separate issue from asking about the layoffs or voluntary separation packages.

Thanks to all who replied.  I signed the letter.  Looks like they are going to double my workload.  Sure is nice to be FI!
