Huge ios9 mistake with my 4s

Yeah that's right. I said 4s. Why?  Because I'm frugal and it's been paid for for a long time and my mvno service is cheap.

So I upgraded without a backup. Hit the button to upgradee and went WHOOPS!

Now my phone is in paperweight mode.

1) my last backup was a year ago in iTunes

2) can I remove the sim to get to my notes and text messages?  Pictures will come up on my pic so I've quickly copied those.

3) I have an iPad mini. Apple can't help at Genius Bar till Thursday. I use my phone for work. Is there a way to cheaply get and make calls with my mini on 3G/4g?  I've already set up hangouts for when on wifi.

Help!!!  I don't want to lose my data by restoring to the year ago copy or going to factory settings.

After getting data back, it's ti,e for a new phone.

Oh no! I have a 4S too. Same reasons as you, I own it outright and its cheap to run. I spend, wait for it, 99 pesos (about 2 dollars something a month) for 3G internet and maybe another 100 pesos for calls and texts.

Plus even the pickpockets in Manila aren't interested in an old iPhone...so there is value in that too.

I will have to try and dodge the update. But I am backing it up right now. Thanks for the warning!

You should be able to remove the SIM. Just do some finangling with a paper clip to get it out.

You can remove the sim but I am very doubtful that you will get your sms'es or notes from that. You will be lucky to get contacts. Your phone is not a deadweight though, it can easily be recovered, but there is a fair chance that if nothing is backed up (you fool!!) you'll have lost that information. Once you go into DFU mode, which is the last resort, you've lost anything that was on there.

sounds like your main problem here is that you updated without backing up. Interesting though that you say you can see your pics - are you able to connect the phone to itunes and either sync or take a backup now?

The reason I ask is that when my 4s sustained water damage I thought it had become a brick but it turned out that only the screen had stopped functioning. As a result I was able to pull all my data off successfully - worth a shot.

For everyone else still rocking an old 4s don't be put off by this - I don't have mine anymore so cant attest to it, but iOS 9 is supposed to be more efficient and give better performance on older devices than iOS 8 - just remember to backup before updating!

Also for anyone struggling by using an old 4s with poor battery life, replacement batteries are cheap and surprisingly quick and easy to fit and will give your phone a new lease of life

iOS does not store notes or text messages on the SIM card, so that won't do you any good.

Are you sure you never set up iCloud backup? That's a lot more convenient than backing up to iTunes. (It happens automatically every night if the phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.)

Edit: You can check to see if you have an iCloud backup by logging into iCloud.com in a browser on your PC, clicking on Settings, then clicking on the icon representing your 4S. If you have a backup, it should say "Latest Backup: Yesterday at XX:YY PM" or whatever.

Further edit: I just re-read your post (and Doubleh's reply) and I'm confused -- you were able to recover photos from the phone even after it became a "paperweight"? If so, then all is not lost... What makes you think it is a paperweight? What are you seeing on the screen when you try to power it on?

With some finagling I can get my pic to recognize the iPhone when I plug it in by usb. That said, I can only explore the drive that shows pictures which is good.

I also have a program called "touch copy12" which was able to get my notes but oddly enough my notes only showed updates from about July 5th of this year. That would limit my data lost to 2 months instead of 14 months.

I was hoping to get to some text messages but that isn't working for some reason.

1) what's the diff between backup and sync in iTunes?

2) sometimes iTunes recognizes my phone (I can see my backup)and sometimes it thinks the iPhone is u configured (I can't see my backup from July 2014)

3) I agree I will be able to get the phone functional again. I'm just trying not to lose data

4) this is the famous "slide to upgrade" problem which affects iphone4s at a minimum when upgrading to ios9

Any other thoughts from you smart mmmers out there?  I'm planning to take my phone and laptop to the apple store tomorrow and see if I can squeeze in when it opens.

1) backup happens from the phone to the pc and creates a copy of the content of the phone. Sync happens from the pc to the phone and adds content that you want onto the phone. Sync can also erase the phone if you aren't careful because it syncs to one iTunes library at a time.

It was a glitch that happened on his phone. The 4s is compatible with iOS9. Just btw, how many 3-4 year old Android phones are being updated regularly to the latest release version?

I have no idea. I guess we live in a throw away society so probably not many. I still have my iPhone 3Gs and love it. Unfortunately, it's locked to one provider which is a bummer.

I would make a guess that no Android phones of that age are still being updated. The obsolescence rate of Android is terrible and from a security point of view, very dangerous:
