My Relationship with Fruit
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:03:57 PM »
http://theoatmeal.com/comics/fruit

Has anyone else seen this great comic?

It could not be truer for me, unfortunately.  The past three months I have started to stop this bad habit and eat what is fresh, good, and healthy first.  I actually just ate a banana (which would have expired in a day or two) instead of chips and salsa.

I wonder why it is so easy to ignore the healthy option.  Once I eat the healthy option, I feel great.

Did you read the word "a" in front of "Fruit" in the title?

I have the opposite problem in a house of four plus two visitors.  I buy two big bunches of bananas (one of them not quite ripe), set them on the kitchen counter at 7pm, and when I go to grab one the following morning, I'm picking up the last banana.  Fruit does not last here.

Yup, us too. When I bought apples at Costco, my family would eat a flat of them (what is that, like 12?) in a day. A bunch of banana's is a one or maybe two day proposition. 5 pounds of satsumas are gone in 12 hours. I love June - October because all our fresh eating fruit comes from the backyard. The kids just graze.

I do this way too often, and I love fruit. I just end up putting it in the fridge and keep planning to eat it and then never do. I started throwing them in the blender to make smoothies and got into it more, but part of it is laziness, and sometimes forgetfulness. At other times, especially when eating over at peoples houses I just don't end up eating at home. When there was two back to back birthday parties with food I didn't eat a thing out of the fridge for 3-4 days since they sent food home with us.

Well to be fair, and not to give salsa a completely bad rap, salsa is full of tomatoes which are considered fruits...plus there are some "fruitier" salsas.

That said, the comic is totally me as well! I just threw out two apples I bought over a month and a half ago...But I also just ate my first banana in a while just like you! Bananas are so damn good...So are apples really...

Yeah, that's me too.

I bought some fruit on the 22nd of June and promptly forgot about it until yesterday. Took it to work and it's still good, although one pear had to be thrown out.

This made me laugh! not only is it what i do, but bananas are one of the few fruits i enjoy and have a hard time getting to one. My kids will eat them even when damn near green.

If you want to get rid of your fruit, have kids and leave it out in a fruit bowl.  I go grocery shopping on Saturday and we run out of fruit by Tuesday night.

My fake brother in law can plow through a box of oranges from Costco in 2-3 days.  That's 36 oranges.  Sometimes other people will have one or two, but if we buy oranges, he'll demolish them.

We've become exact fruit purchasers. We were so sick of wasting produce that we now buy the precise number of fruits & vegetables we need. I do look a bit ridiculous in the produce aisle because I'm the lady with a calculator figuring out the cheapest options and then dividing up bunches of bananas to achieve the 14 that I buy every week :).

And if we binge on fruit and run out before the end of the week, we just make another quick trip to the store (we live in the city so it's easy to bike or walk there from our house). We had to throw out an apple that went prematurely bad the other day, but other than that, I don't think we've thrown out any produce in months. Sometimes we do eat odd food combos in order to use up dying produce, but that just keeps life interesting!

I'm like this with vegetables, sometimes, but rarely with fruit. Fruit's too easy to eat.

I'm glad you said it first! I was reading this thread and thinking I was way different from the OP.

I'm more of a fruit fanatic...a fruitanatic I guess.

This reminds me of an interview with a fruitarian I saw once on Sanjay Gupta's show on CNN when I used to have cable (pre-MMM blog reading days, of course). I'd never heard of a fruitarian before. Check out the interview with the fruitarian athlete:
http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/cnns-sanjay-gupta-interviews-fruitarian-athlete-michael-arnstein-video/

If I had to pick between the two, I'd go fruitarian over vegetarian any day (assuming vegetarian in this case was an only-veggie diet).

The only reason I agree with OP is that I am such a fruitanatic, that I usually buy too much fruit and don't realize it has a limited shelf life and I may not get to all of it in time (typing as I am eating some yummy watermelon).

EDIT: Also reminded of a story from a trip to Australia with some friends. I had read in a book that there was a farm nearby that had a fruit that tasted like chocolate. So I made my friends drive out of the way just to go try out this fruit. They were perplexed and resisting a little as they didn't want to "waste time" going there. Well, sure enough, after trying out the fruit they thanked me for the little diversion. How could you NOT try the local fruits in a place you are visiting - is what I say.

Well, you can't tell us this and then not tell us about the fruit! What's it called? Was it worth it?

I feel compelled to share that I just hate-ate a brown banana to keep from throwing it out. I'm not happy about it and it tasted gross, but I'm happier than throwing it out. Blerg. And yes, I do have quite a few frozen brown bananas that will transmute into banana bread at some point.

I can introduce you to my 5 yo. Yesterday, in the car on the way home from summer camp she ate a peach and 3 bananas. She doesn't even weigh 50lbs.

To be fair she was then too full to eat dinner, but still . . .

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
