My favourite day of the month
« on: August 31, 2012, 05:12:55 AM »
Its the last day of August.. the last day of the month now being one of my favourite days.

Its the day I get to check all my credit and mortgage balances and chart my net worth.  I've really approached my mustachian makeover very gently, and am due lots  more face punches but am really starting to notice changes. The interest on the mortgage is down several hundred dollars a month compared to the beginning of the year and now costs about the same as if we were to rent a more modest dwelling. Of course there are other costs to home ownership, but the difference is diminishing. The stache has gone up 4.4% in 2months...no doubt this won't continue but after seeing flat flat flat for quite a while this is at least temporarily exciting.

I'm ahead of all my projections/goals with regard to net debt/net worth and am about to hit a major net worth goal probably a couple of months ahead of time.

I unexpectedly found another $100/month of expenses I can lose, and acted to secure that in the last week. I no longer worry about keeping on top of the expenses each month..its just a question of will I hit my savings target or not.

I am pretty excited. Some days it seems to be taking so long to be making progress...but the end of the month is my favourite day.

What about anyone else?

I also love the last day of the month, for similarly financially geeky reasons. It's when I log all my savings, expenses, and recalculate my net worth. And it's payday! Haha.

Updating my Excel files every end of the month used to be such a chore. Now it's the total opposite. Haha.

I also look forward to today after the markets close so I can update my spreadsheets... we are such nerds.

Hah, you guys are funny.  :D

I update in the middle of the month (when the previous month has settled out), between my two paychecks.  Do all my assets and net worth as of that date, and check spending and income from the previous month.

It usually happens around the 14th-16th, but it's whenever I remember to do it around then.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

The last day of the month is my favorite too!  I get my second paycheck of the month, and I add it and the leftover from my first paycheck to my investments.  It's also a good day to pull up Mint.com and update my budget for the next month.  Money has become a fun strategy game to me.

It seems like I always have to wait a business day after the end of the month in order to get accurate numbers for my index funds and 401k. My favorite part is seeing how far the "Estimated time to FI" line on my spreadsheet has gone down.

AWWWWWWW YEAH! Stash that cash and grow the stash!

I too enjoy the monthly financial come to Jesus. However, the law of diminishing returns is starting to kick in http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/08/16/what-it-feels-like-to-become-rich/.

I'm actually too neurotic to wait a month, I'm constantly updating Quicken every 1-2 days.  I agree with arebelspy that it takes a week or two to have the prior month stabilize, though I suppose that's a sign that I have too many transactions going on all the time.

@StashinIt.....yes I'm sure I'll hit a floor that I can't go below some time, but I'm not there yet. Maybe I should make that a goal too.. to get to bedrock by a certain date.  I'm better at making plans than taking action... hence my illusion to "a gentle approach".

I update on the 3rd Saturday of every month, after option expiration.  I sell a lot of puts, so I have to wait until option expiration to see how things settle out.  Since I get paid at work every 2 weeks, the end of the month isn't very relevant to me.  But it's always fun to update, whenever you do it!

Yeah! I do it weekly, as I get paid weekly. But I like the first day of the month because that's when the bank pays interest on my meagre savings (still ~$50 a month) :)

Its here again. My favourite day. Pleased to report debt reduction remains ahead of projections. The big excitement this month is my interest bill (all mortgage, no other debt)  is $500 less than Jan 2012 when I started this MMM gig and started more aggressively paying down the mortgage.

Wow, I check compulsively every day, maybe every other day? But I must say it's not that satisfying. Maybe I'll try your once-a-month method and see if it gets more tasty.

I have to say I run lots of calculations frequently...several times a week, daily even, how long to pay off the mortgage with what repayment, different housing, FI scenarios, and check the balance of my stache etc.

However the end of the month I chart the figures. I never know what the bank will charge in interest each month until it happens (although I guess I could calculate that too, but I'm not that big a maths nerd). Its arbitrary, but the monthly day of the charting of the figures provides me with delicious anticipation. Now I have 9 months of figures seeing progress is much more fun.
