Redbox.

Because I can rent like 30 movies before I can take the four of us to the movies once.  No thanks I'll wait.  Plus bonus I can pause it for potty breaks and rewatch in the morning before returning.

Tools.

Because we don't hire a painter/plumber/yard guy/cook/car wash attendant/laundry person/etc. When possible, we prefer to DIY.

The hall light switch sometimes throws a spark and I'm seriously thinking about trying to figure that puppy out myself versus calling a guy for $100 an hour.

Not tools, because buy a good used one once and it's yours for life. But parts and materials? Definitely.

Also possibly groceries, because most Americans now spend more eating out than buying food to take home. It's possible this is not the case, though, because most Americans buy stupid expensive processed crap instead of buying food at the grocery store.

And likely, by living in a modest home, less in property tax than their peer group.  Regular folks certainly pay more as a whole in consumer sales tax.
Do you have any idea how much property tax I my tenants pay on my rentals? ;)

Coffee grinders. And no face punches ensue.

http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/coffee-grinder-for-around-200$/

Second time in a week or two I've seen someone link it as a complaint there was insufficient face punching.  Also, second time it's been linked improperly so I still can't see the thread you're so unhappy about.  If you need face punches delivered, why not deliver them yourself on the mythical coffee thread?

That link only took me to the index for AAM... you might wanna check it.

I paid $199 for mine and I'd do it again...

...oops, I missed a decimal point. $1.99 at the thrift store. Big burly fucker too, it'll even grind nuts for pesto. What do I win? ;)

In general high quality items that in turn last a lot longer.

Just bought a hair groomer twice the price of a normal consumer groomer because it's professional quality.

Also things to keep things in a good condition, like maintenance oil for the groomer :) Other people never do maintenance and throw away the whole thing after two years.

Id say in general that the average thrifty MMM reader would spend more on simple ingredients than the average joe who tends to go for premade food stuffs when grocery shopping.

Second time in a week or two I've seen someone link it as a complaint there was insufficient face punching.  Also, second time it's been linked improperly so I still can't see the thread you're so unhappy about.  If you need face punches delivered, why not deliver them yourself on the mythical coffee thread?

Found it:

1) You didn't comment yourself on it.  Seems that's the far more productive thing to do than complain to people who probably haven't seen the thread (like me).

2) You're wrong, a bunch of people told him not to do it.  Some phrased it more politely than others.  Do you feel people required rude, direct responses for it to sink in?

- I'm not familiar with those grinders, but I have an alternative to suggest. I got a Hario Skerton manual grinder, replaced the crank with a hex nut, and now grind coffee using an old drill with a 10mm hex driver on it. It's a ghetto setup, and you have to hold it instead of pressing a button, but it's cheaper, easier to fix, easier on the hands than a manual crank, and still works when the power's out.

- While I can't help you with your quest, I can at least confirm this ^^^  I've been using a $30 blade grinder with a $30 aeropress for about 10 years.

- To the OP, if you MUST have a Baratza, keep a watch on their factory refurbished store.

- I'm just going to point out that this is exactly the opposite of Mustachianism.
My $20 Hario Mini Mill hand cranked burr grinder works great.

- I know coffee is a drug, an addiction, and also for many of us, required for functionality. However, it still surprises me when big numbers are thrown around. If I was purchasing now, I'd get a manual Hario grinder, but in my less mustachian days, I got a Cuisinart DBM-8 burr grinder. It's loud, and it does create some "powder" along with the grinds, but I'm quite happy with the flavor I get with my AeroPress filtered coffee. It's $50 - so again I'd choose the Hario if I was doing it all over again.

- Why not gring a bag of beans in the store (surely their big grinders are the nice kind?) Then store the bag in your freezer? Wouldn't they stay fresh that way?
Coffee is apparently really expensive when you start buying 200$ grinders. I had no idea such a thing existed.

- I got http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001KOA7I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage a few years ago.  I understand the need for a burr grinder rather than the blade grinder.  I spent way more on the grinder than I did on the coffee pot or espresso maker.  I'm not sure you need a $200 one unless you are making multiple espressos daily

- Uh, I got mine for $1 at a garage sale???

- I'm a coffee nerd and really work more for a hobby and still had a heart attack looking at a $220 Grinder.  That thing better have a lifetime warranty because that's a hell of a cost for a grinder!

Groceries, when they're on sale.

For example, this morning I bought 16 jars of my favorite spaghetti sauce at .62/large jar.  I can't make it that cheaply, and this'll probably last us 'til Christmas.

Home hair cutting gear.

YES! THIS! LOL

I cut my husband's hair and people think it's weird but go with it. I don't tell anyone I cut my own hair, that would be way to far for them!

I'm not sure why some of you believe mustachians spend more on travel than non mustachians.   Consumer suckas travel all the time.  Some states entire economy is built on tourism, mostly from consumer suckas.

Not 100% accurate, but it seems like we would do more cultural traveling, while the non-mustachians would do an all-inclusive beach resorts type of deal. I probably spend more than them, but I learn a lot about the world in the process.

Here's a game, it may have already been done here, but the forum 'search' never works properly for me.

I believe Mustachians spend more than the average person on:

- Lentils
- Rice
- Potatoes
- LED lightbulbs (the average doesn't buy them yet it seems)
- Bikes?  (Probably not, the average person I know who buys a bike has to buy the most expensive fancypants bike there is.)
- Library late fees?  (Surely not!  Though we use the libraries more than the average, we'd facepunch ourselves over a late fee.)
- Tools?  (Hell, no!  We're DIYers but check Craigslist first.)
- Bike trailers? (Check!  We do use those and I don't see others using them unless a kid is in the back.)
- Solar panels?
- ....

What else?  What do you think?  It's really not that easy to come up with things.  :)

The office swear jar.
If we had an office swear jar I would not be able to invest in my taxable accounts.

In my case,

Books
Camping gear
Sports gear

Not an outrageous amount, but probably more than the average consumer.

My, we're in a mood today, aren't we? I posted the link because I thought it was a perfect example for this thread. I also found it amusing. I have no complaints about what people choose to spend their money on and no need or desire to be rude. So chill out.

Sports classes and sports gear for sure. But when you consider the health impact it probably has a negative cost.
Also education - a lot of people here seem to be doing further studies to either improve their earning potential or give them options for post FI.

I LOL'ed, too. Actually, many non-Mustachians may not even be eligible to buy VTSAX, as it is the Admiral-Class share category and they'd need to hit the minimum for their shares to be converted ;-)

Lots of Vanguard index funds is so true. lol

Oats!

I eat two bowls of porridge or one cup of oats a day. I used to buy the big box of oats from Costco. I now buy steel cut oats from Sprouts, which I cook overnight in my second hand crockpot. They are tastier and ready to eat even if I am not fully awake.

I don't know why but I am always surprised when I realize (usually by visiting out-of-shape friends' homes) that what you say is sadly too true--many, many people don't eat any vegetables at all.  ...Unless it's a slice of tomato on a burger or something.  It just amazes me.  And then there's my Facebook feed.  :(  People will post photos of veggies in their kitchen or a fruit smoothy like it's a really big deal that they're doing it.  "Look everyone!  I'm actually having kale and a fucking avocado with dinner tonight.  Gettin' in shape!!"  Me:  "Yeah,  umm...  That's what you're supposed to do dumbass.  Want a medal?  You gonna brag about carrots next?"

I've noticed a lack of produce as well when I go out of state. Usually what I see is freezers full of different types of processed meats , potato dishes, desserts. All processed frozen type, not fresh . and lots of fast-food.

I don't think we spend more on used cars. A lot of non mustachians buy used cars that are one or two year old pickups that still cost more than a new car.

On a per capita basis though, I'm sure we buy more used cars than an average cross-section of society.

Umm.. Hard to phrase the above properly, but you know what I mean.  ;)

During my twenties - massive quantities of Cheerios.  With coupons whenever I could and always on sale.  I frequently got comments from other shoppers, perhaps because that was often the only thing in my cart.  Is buying 20 boxes of Cheerios at a time really so strange? Cheerios make a great breakfast, dinner, snack and no doubt helped me pay off my mortgage in 2 years.  Cheerios, the path to financial freedom!

Now that I'm older and FIRE'd I supplement my Cheerios with oats.  If I'm really extravagant a box of Kashi Go Lean Crunch!
