New to MMM and to Pittsburgh.
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:43:15 PM »
I recently started reading MMM after moving to Pittsburgh. I am currently working as a temp, and have way too much time on my hands, which I used to read most of the articles here. I've always been very careful with money, but the wife and I have a lot of student loans that we throw everything at. I'm really hoping some one here might have some job connections in the Pittsburgh area. I left a job in banking compliance that paid 36k, and currently only make 29k (ouch,) I have a B. Sc in Business Administration, so obviously no 100k computer programming jobs for me, but I've worked hard since high school and really want an opportunity for growth, not this dead end quazi permant temp job. Any Pittsburgh residents have any connections that could help me build my stache? Much appreciated.

Blue Collar schlub here with no connections in your chosen field.

Have you tried submitting your resume to BNY Mellon, PNC Financial, or Federated Investors?

Hey! I don't have a ton to add other than I am likely moving from Western NY to Pittsburgh next year. I'll be leaving a mediocre job to do some international traveling and then come back to PA for a fresh start (and be closer to my 2 siblings there).

There's definitely a lot of finance jobs in Pittsburgh. Have you tried sifting through Indeed? You can also apply to those big banks the other poster mentioned and they will periodically email you openings. Sucks having to register a whole profile thing on each of their portals though.

Either way, I'll be paying attention to the replies in this thread. I used to think Pittsburgh was too busy a place for me, but now I'm realizing the small town rural life in NY is wayy worse for many reasons.

I had an interview at BNY Mellon and thought I had nailed it, but then never heard back. I've applied to PNC several times, I'll have to try the Federated Investors. It's kind of sad but my down time at work with nothing to do is split between MMM and Indeed.com.

Hey there NYExpat, welcome to Pittsburgh! I have lived here for a very long time and have a couple of suggestions for you.

- Are you subscribed to Pop City Media and NextPittsburgh? Both of them have weekly newsletters that call out available jobs. Here are a couple of recent listing pages:

http://www.nextpittsburgh.com/jobs/pittsburgh-jobs-for-223/?utm_source=NEXTpittsburgh&utm_campaign=9a0cf82e2a-0224152_23_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_aadbffa18f-9a0cf82e2a-144772561

http://www.popcitymedia.com/innovationnews/hiring02272015.aspx

- Check out CMU and University of Pittsburgh, they're not always hiring but they are good jobs to get

- I've found a few good gigs on Craigslist over the years, too -- can't hurt to check it out

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about fun things to do in town. There's a lot of great stuff going on with the Burgh ...

This is another site for jobs in the Pittsburgh area. I got a request for an interview after I already accepted a different job, so it is legit.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
