Mustachian Theme Songs
« on: February 21, 2014, 07:14:05 PM »
Maybe it is just me, but do any of you play a song in your head to help motivate you to be frugal? If I ever start to feel regret about not purchasing something, or might be tempted to splurge on something I don't really need I start to hear "Taking Care of Business" by B.T.O.

Am I crazy or does anyone else play little motivational theme music like this in your head, and if so what is your go to song?

Love it! Maybe if more people bragged about their investments rather than what they buy people would start following them.

Dancin' in the Street by the mammas and poppas.  Anyone can dance in the street (no cover charge, don't have to dress up) and you can celebrate FI.

I tend to focus more on the benefits of FI and the freedom to do whatI want, or the consequences of spending wastefully and having to work longer. These keep me going in my attempt at frugality. I just think of these song about people feeling like slaves and hating their job, and it motivates me to get going.

Two more I remembered: "Five O'clock World" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3wMesI8aiw
and "Working for a Living" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcIK3akktLU

Avett Brothers Untitled #4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvHiqQfOYFM

I don’t need to be told what to do
I don’t need to be assured by you
I don’t need to pay the credit due (Nah, there is none)
I don’t need you to come back to me
I don’t need another memory
I don’t need to make the world see that I’m not crazy

In a moment of parenting desperation, I once dealt with a toddler tantrum by singing The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want." For some reason this clicked and became kind of a family theme song.

Queen of My Doublewide Trailer by Sammy Kershaw

A song that has vibes of enjoying the simple things.  It makes me think about lifestyle inflation, and one can compare/contrast themselves to the main character living in a trailer (even though double-wide!), thinking that polyester curtains and a redwood deck are worth mentioning, eating chicken-fried steak and onion rings and just watching TV.

Oh my.

Queen of My Doublewide is my ginger Tom cat’s theme song. I sing it to him regularly to assure him of his status in our home. I also appreciate that “vibe of enjoying the simple things.” As well as taking some pride in and caring for what you have. My grandfather used to regularly walk the perimeter of his 1.2 acre estate. I said “grandpa. This isn’t an estate! Rich people own big estates.” He said. “It’s mine.  I own every bit of it. So it’s my estate.” And he took beautiful care of the property and I aspire to be like him.

Who’d have thought that 90s country would inspire such warm thoughts.

Well, we can't talk about Queen of My Doublewide without also mentioning Redneck Yacht Club. Similar vein, albeit perhaps not as mustachian. And the lyrics for both songs crack me up!

Ever since I first started reading MMM many many years ago, I always thought the theme song of the blog should be Merchandise by Fugazi:

When we have nothing left to give
There'll be no reason for us to live
But when we have nothing left to lose
You will have nothing left to use
We owe you nothing
You have no control

Merchandise, it keeps us in line
Common sense says it's by design
What could a businessman ever want more
Than to have us sucking in his store
We owe you nothing
You have no control

YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU OWN

Disney Bear Necessities, from Jungle Book.

Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities, old mother nature's recipes
That bring the bare necessities of life

Billy Joel - Movin' Out

Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door
She said, "Sonny, move out to the country"
Workin' too hard can give you
A heart attack (ack, ack, ack, ack, ack)
You oughta know by now (oughta know)
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that what you get for your money?
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac (ack, ack, ack, ack, ack)
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders
It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
Mama if that's movin' up
Then I'm movin' out
I'm movin' out
You should never argue with a crazy mind (mi-, mi-, mi-, mi-, mi-)
You oughta know by now
You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime
Is that all you get for your money
If that's what you have in mind
If that's what you're all about
Good luck movin' up
'Cause I'm moving out
I'm moving out (mmm)
Ou, ou, uh huh (mmm)
I'm moving out

"Crooked Tree" by Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway. Just a great song, I love the imagery:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x4rCPWtsRM

Perfect trees were driven down the mountain to the mill
They turned them into toothpicks and twenty dollar bills
It seemed the more the people took, the more they needed still in the end

Oh, can't you see
A crooked tree won't fit into the mill machine?
They're left to grow wild and free
I'd rather be a crooked tree
