Mustachian shared housing
« on: March 12, 2013, 01:08:17 AM »
Has anyone started or joined a shared-housing situation for the express purpose of mustachianism? It seems like it could work pretty well if you find the right people. With two or three people sharing a decent house in my area, the per-person rent could be several thousand dollars a year less than what I'm currently paying for my apartment. I could fund my Roth IRA with that! And living with other mustachians could offer other benefits, like motivational reinforcement and shared resources of various kinds.

For the last year, I've been renting out the house I own and have been renting an apartment for myself closer to work. This has resulted in a positive cash flow change of several hundred bucks a month, so I feel pretty good about that. But sometimes I think about all the rent checks I'm writing and I dream of getting my housing cost down even more. I'm too set in my ways to move into any old group house with a bunch of young'uns, but living with other professionals in a nice mustachian shared house with a good kitchen and a garden is something I could imagine doing.

I have a four bedroom house and sometimes view each bedroom as 1/4 of my mortgage/basic house running costs.  Currently my brother lives with my son and me, and I do find that the pooling of resources is a good one (although most of the resources are mine, not all are).

It's working well for us right now, but I have considered that renting out rooms in my house could be part of my early retirement plan.
