In my neighborhood 2 houses ago, there was a fellow who did just that.  Every day, I could see him pushing his mower up and down the street, from lawn to lawn.  However, doing things that way certainly has to cut down on one's billable time.

That's probably true, though I wonder how much of that time might otherwise be non-billable anyway (i.e. drumming up business in between jobs).  The other factor is the gas expenses that he doesn't have (though I'm sure he'd need to eat more), and in this day and age, he could market it as being "green."

Having my own small landscaping "business" in high school was the best job I ever had. It was wonderful being outside on a perfect sunny day, cash earnings, making twice as much as my high school friends while working half the time, and getting some level of physical activity.

Doing a small, low overhead landscaping business is definitely something I've thought about in the past and want to try part time after hitting FI.

What kinds of work did you do?  I am doing my own (very minor) landscaping, and like it as an alternative to "working out."  But I'd probably hate it if I was "on the clock" and had to push through sweat and tears to get something done on time.

There's also nice psychological benefit to using a push mower. It's quiet! You can thus easily enjoy nature, listen to music or podcasts, etc. I've grown to hate using my power equipment for the noise alone.

My primary job right now is being a Dad, but once the kids are old enough I can leave them for brief periods, I might drum up some extra $ via lawns and other services. I enjoy physical labor, whether in my own yard or for $.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
