Mustachian classes/levels
« on: December 30, 2016, 04:23:25 PM »
I read here often and post seldomly.  Sometimes I wonder how many different levels of mustachian there are.  Inside this framework there are many different distinct classes.  I can relate to many topics/articles on here but some are way too hardcore for me.  I save roughly 50% of my income but still far for FI.  I think I fall somewhere in the middle of beginner/hardcore as I would be face punched by many if they analyzed me.

Some of the classes I have noticed:
Professional couples (or single) that make tons and save tons
Families that are trying to save for the future and not work till SS age
Hardcore 30 year old tech dude that lives on 12k/year

This one size fits all mustachian life seems to have many sizes to me.  What do you think?

We're not pokemon... there's no levelling up here :D

Everyone's situation is different, and there are many paths and many destinations to head towards.

Dammit! I started hanging my clothes instead of using the dryer and you're trying to take away my levelup?

No WAY! I decline!

Everyone has different goals and or priorities. What some are seemingly willing to give up more than others doesnt feel that way to them because for reasons such as they might spend all there time outdoors or can walk to work etc... Simply put I feel its just putting your life under a microscope and seeing what things you can change by being smarter and along the way you find out more and more whats your needs vs wants which will eventually put you on a better path.

This is funny, I have noticed a few as well.

The higher earners that dont really talk too much until they FIR'ed.
Techy's that goes in to highly detailed(OCDish) trials and errors, along with justifications behind the strategies.
Laidback types that could live near the minimalism thing without too much thoughts and worries.

I read a post once that defined spending levels e.g. $40k/yr, $32kyr, $25k/yr, $18k, $12k, $7k and said that the group below them was frugal and it was a 'goal', the one below that was crazy frugal and not possible for them and anything below that was just crazy and impossible. The original post was written much better. . . It may have been an ere post.

I think there are definitely personal level-ups.  2017 is going to be a massive level-up for me!

One thing is do not try to compare yourself to others on here. Everyone has different goals and makes different incomes and have different expense totals. What you need to do is focus on yourself and your goals and if you do that you will be fine. Do not get discouraged as mustachians on here come from all income levels and backgrounds so if someone on here makes more than you do not get discouraged.

Nemesis.

It's not what you make that counts, it's what you keep.

As I read on another forum, more than one way to Dublin!

I think that applies here!

This is similar to the "Wheaton Eco Scale" that Paul Wheaton created for levels of sustainability or environmental friendliness.  He separated the world population into 10 levels of ascending sustainability and said this about comparing yourself to different levels:

Observation 1:  most people find folks one or two levels up took pretty cool.  People three levels up look a bit nutty.  People four of five levels up look downright crazy.  People six levels up should probably be institutionalized.   I find the latter reactions to be inappropriate.

Observations 2:  most people find folks one level back are ignorant.  Two levels back are assholes.  Any further back and they should be shot on sight for the betterment of society as a whole.  I find that all of these reactions are innapropriate.
